Painting Dirt - Hobby Vlog 99

Day 99 of hobby vlogging—painting a terrain board with craft paints and inks, plus a mail day surprise with Mage Knight boosters.

The Board is Solid

This thing is solid. Going to be able to flip it over, not worry about any damage to the other side. But now we got to paint—rattle can gray just to give it all a uniform coat.

Tons of textures. Some of it I don’t really like. The stones—I think they’re just too big. But I think once I get the paint on it’ll be better. Over here is pretty bad because I didn’t do a good job of blending those stones in. The middle of the board itself looks really good, but we’ll see how it looks after paint.

Mail Day!

Check this out. Six Mage Knight boosters! That’s enough for two people to do old school Mage Knight Dungeons booster draft. If I remember right, there’s a hero in each and then mage spawn and treasure chest in each.

I got to figure out the draft rules—I’m pretty sure you just run with what you get in your three boosters. I got to find somebody to play with. Maybe I can talk my wife into it.

I got these crazy cheap off Facebook—like $20 total including shipping. Pretty crazy!

The Painting Process

Going to use Apple Barrel Nutmeg. I don’t actually like this brown itself, but I think it’s a good midtone. I’m going to mix it right on the board itself.

This is Bronze Flesh Tone—just pick a warm orange. I’m going to dot this on the high areas. And then I have transparent burnt umber ink that I’ll put in the low spots and blend it all together.

The Wet Mud Look

It looks like a mess, but trust me. Big wide brush—this is the biggest brush I got that’s easily accessible right now. Keep in mind this is just the first pass. We’re going to put multiple layers on here and hit it with a wash, so don’t get too worried about it looking like trash right now.

I washed my brush out, got a glove on, going to take a paper towel and just kind of sponge this off.

One thing I do want to point out: this edge right here is where all that medium ballast was that I didn’t like. I’m going to keep the paint thick there because it’ll harden and thin out a little bit. If I keep it globbed up there, it’ll ease that transition more.

The Final Pass

One final pass of paper towel. I’m just hitting the whole board going in a circle, making it smaller each time just to make sure I get anything that’s pulled up.

Right now because the paint’s wet, it just looks like mud—which is pretty much what we want. When it dries, it’ll look like earth. All this color variation is from our actual paint. It looks like a big pile of poop right now, but that’s good. We want it to look like wet mud.

Day 100 Preview

Tomorrow is day 100—crazy! I’ll finish it on day 100. Hit it with an oil wash, wipe off the top layer. Probably heat gun it just enough that I can dry brush on and be done painting wise. I’ll paint the rim.

On day 100 it’ll be finishing the board, getting all the Crucible Guard based, getting Trench Crusade all based and finished, then all that stuff primed. That way on 101, going hard on painting again. Going to stop with the building, stop with 3D printing for a bit, and just focus on painting again.

Transcript

Yeah, like this thing solid. Going to be able to flip it over, not worry about any damage to the other side of it. Uh, but now we got to paint rattle can gray just to give it all just a uniform coat. Uh, tons of textures. Some of it I don’t really like.

Uh, like these stones. I think the stones are just too big, you know? But I think once I get the paint on over here is pretty bad because it’s just like I didn’t do a good job of blending those stones in. The middle of the board itself looks really good, but uh we’ll see how it looks after I get some paint on it. I thought about it and I don’t want to mess around with magnets.

So, I’m just going to glue this one and print uh more bodies because why? Day. Check this out. I think I know what this is. Boom.

Six boosters. Uh that’s enough for two people to do old school Mighty Dungeons booster draft. So, uh, if I remember right, there’s a hero in each and then you have their mage spawn and treasure chest in each. I have to look up the draft rules. I’m pretty sure you just run with what you get in your three boosters.

Uh, so I got to figure that out. I got to find somebody to play with. Maybe I can talk my wife into it. But I I got these crazy cheap on off Facebook. I think like $5.

Um, or no, I think even less than that. I think it was like 20 total including shipping. Uh, pretty crazy. also got this. >> And this came all the way from uh 9inth Circle Press in the UK.

Uh this is my Christmas present from my wife. Uh I have to give that to her so she can wrap it up. I probably she probably didn’t know I This isn’t really hobby related at all, but it’s cool that I got 51 of 120. Very cool. Okay, so going to use apple barrel.

Uh this is a this is nutmeg. Um, I actually don’t like this brown itself, but I think it’s a good midtone. And so, what I’ll do is I’m going to mix it just right on the board itself. Uh, this is bronze flesh tone. It’s I just pick a orange, like a warm orange.

I’m going to dot this on the high areas. And then I have just uh transparent burnt umber ink that I’ll put in the low spots. and uh blend this all together. Whoa. Got a clog in it.

Knew that was going to happen. Did it anyway. And so we just start putting this where we want to just mix up like create our shadows. And I’m still pretty sick. Uh so voice probably sounds weird.

All right. I don’t want to get too crazy before we actually get going here. It looks like a mess, but just you got to trust me. So big wide brush. This is the biggest brush I got that’s easily accessible right now.

And also a thing to keep in mind is this is also just the first pass and that was where that crazy the crazy blob of orange hit. So we’re so we’re also we’re going to put different multiple layers on here. So, like we we’ll hit this is just to get this start browning it up. And I want this to be pretty bright, which is why I put so much of the orange on here. But we’ll also hit this with a wash, you know?

So, don’t don’t get too crazy or don’t get too worried about it looking like trash right now. Okay. So, I washed my brush out. Uh but got a glove on. gonna take a paper towel and just kind of sponge this off.

One thing I do want to point out here is in this edge right here, this is where all those like the medium ballast was that I didn’t like how it looked. Let me move you back a little bit so you can see. And I’m going to keep the paint thick there cuz it’s going to it’ll harden and it’s going to thin out a little bit. But uh if I keep it globbed up there, it’ll ease that transition more. So, I actually do want to keep that part globbed up.

All right. So, I just put just put some ink on. All right. And now again, just blending it out, feathering it out. This brush is so big and so wide and the it’s super soft.

It’s a makeup brush. Okay. Actually, this is like packing like butcher paper. I’m going to do this just to get a little bit more texture into it. I don’t think this is porous enough to like take a bunch of the paint off.

Okay, one final pass of paper towel. And I’m just going to I’m just hitting the whole board. I’m going in a circle and I’m just making it smaller each time just to make sure uh that I get anything that’s like pulled up that I can’t see. Okay. So, right now cuz the paint’s wet, it just looks like mud, which is pretty much what we want.

When it dries, it’ll look like earth. But all this color variation is from our actual paint. So, it looks like uh a big pile of poop right now, but that’s good. That’s what we want. We want it to look like wet mud.

Okay, so uh going to call tonight. Let this dry tonight. Uh this is day 99. Tomorrow day 100. Crazy.

Uh finish it on day 100. What I’ll do is hit it with a oil wash, wipe off the top layer. Then I’ll probably heat gun it just enough to that I can dry brush on and be done painting wise. I’ll paint the rim. Uh and then I won’t seal it.

I let that oil dry uh all the way. Give that a little bit. But this will be done paint-wise. Um, struggling. Still very sick.

Uh, on the 3D printer right now is the last of the crucible guard that I need or that’s even out right now. Uh, two railless. I fit I fit two rail interceptors on the same plate, which is pretty cool. So, I’ll get that printed. Uh, and then I’ll probably do a plate to get to full FA of the heavies and lights and then I’ll be done.

But I’ll do that in the morning when this finishes. That’s going to take like eight I think eight hours. Then everything else is good. So day 100 uh on day 100 uh it’ll be finishing the board getting all the crucible guard based getting trench crusade all based and finished and then all that stuff primed and then that way on 101 going hard on painting again. And I’m going to stop with the building, stop with uh 3D printing for a bit, and just focus on painting again for a
