Breaking a three-year no-new-GW streak at my old local store, plus why the daily hobby vlog is winding down so I can start building 40k my way for 11th edition.

The old neighborhood
What’s up, guys? Today I was at a client’s office and I realized I was down the street from where my wife and I — my girlfriend at the time — had our first apartment, which was right across the street from the Games Workshop store. I actually had that apartment before I met her, and the reason I chose it was so I could walk to the Games Workshop store.
I haven’t been there in many years. So let’s go — let’s see how it looked.
The storefront sign still hasn’t changed. I like how it still says “Games Workshop” even though it’s all crusty and faded. I wasn’t able to record inside, but they’ve got three full 6x4 gaming tables and a 2x2 up front, and it looked like they had a kill team set up. Three tables is pretty good — only a few stores around here have more than that. Good for them.
Breaking the streak
I got the best modern Games Workshop miniature ever made, in my opinion. I absolutely love this guy. Everything about it — his little toesies out, his fingers plotting, all the crazy admech things. So many kitbash opportunities with this guy.
I’ve always wanted one, never been able to track one down, and there he was just waiting for me. I had to snatch him. I’ve broken my two-almost-three-year no-new-GW-purchase streak, but it was worth it. Tech-Priest Manipulus. So good.
11th edition plans
As everybody knows, 11th edition is coming — we’re a couple of months away. I’m slammed with commission projects this month and next, so I’m not starting any new projects right now. But I’m planning and thinking about what I’ll start when these commissions are done.
There’s Necromunda 28, which I really want to get into. I have all the miniatures I want to use for it already — from the Gardens of Hecate and the Andrew Mayers Kickstarter. Very excited to paint those with the intention of using them on Necromunda. Also Sunrot — very excited for Sunrot, which has some overlap. And Trench Crusade. Very excited about those.
But also with the 40K new edition coming: the last actual game I played was 8th edition, but I haven’t really played since 7th. I want to give 11th a shot, but I want to do it on my terms. I’m working on a full video about that. Coming soon.
The next stage of the channel
Which brings me to the big one — we just hit 200 subscribers. Which is just insane to think about. I think it’s time that the channel matures and enters the next stage of things, and that I mature and enter the next stage of things.
So soon the daily hobby vlog is coming to an end.
I want to start making nice high-quality videos — real projects, real tutorials, real start-to-finish “here’s how you do something” content. Better production value, better scripts. I don’t script anything right now, obviously — it’s all off the top of my bald head. I just want to make better videos and better content, and it’s not possible to do that every day.
I’m still going to record every day. I’m still going to hobby every day. Maybe I’ll do shorts every day — I don’t know. I don’t love participating in the shorts and attention garbage, but maybe the behind-the-scenes daily vlog will live in YouTube shorts now. That might be how it works.
This isn’t the last hobby vlog. I’m still going to do more daily hobby vlogs. But I’m winding it down so I can start making cooler, better, nicer videos. That’s how you progress — as a person, a channel, a hobbyist, an artist. The daily vlogs are limiting me right now.
220-something days of daily videos proved to me that I could do it. Now I want to do it well.
The demon hunter army
That being said — I want to start an 11th edition project. 11th edition is probably coming in June or July. I want to walk you around the room, which is mostly clean now, which is crazy.
I’m at the point where I want to build a 40k army on my terms and not make the same mistakes I always do. One of my first videos is going to lay out the ground rules for that, so I can share them and maybe some of you want to follow the same rules with me and not fall into the same traps. I’m sure a lot of people are doing it.
The army itself: I’m going to take the Daemonhunters third edition codex and cross-reference to the newest Imperial Agents codex. I don’t know the rules or point values — which doesn’t matter, because I don’t care about any of that. Even when it comes out, I’m not going to care about any of that.
I want to build the Daemonhunters army of third edition that I wanted as a kid. When I was a kid it was 3rd and 4th edition, but the 3rd edition codexes are really what I drooled over — and Daemonhunters specifically. So I’m going to build a modern take on the 3rd edition Daemonhunters. Entirely converted, entirely kitbashed. Really cool.
I’m very excited about it. Maybe it’ll see games. I don’t know if I’ll ever actually play 40k — I don’t have a super desire to play it — but I do want to get back to the Warhammer side of things. I’ve missed it. Got to admit it. I miss it. I’m coming on home, baby.
So that’s enough rambling.
