Rambling about competitive vs fun games.

What’s up everybody? Uh, I’m going to do a ramble over some of my games from Sunday. I was originally just going to recap the day, but it it got me thinking about this other topic, and that is like why why even play competitive war games or competitive games. Uh, especially I realized that in terms of fun, I have the most fun really. I have the most fun at home by myself playing Karath right now.

Uh, I’m loving that game. I’m loving everything about it. Um, it’s just pure fun. It’s pure creative energy. It’s just the flow of of writing a story with the dice and seeing what happens in the oracle tables and I don’t know what’s coming.

It’s more fun than like sitting down and trying to write a a novel or something because I don’t really know what’s going to happen and I’m just I’m still getting to roll dice, you know? So, why why would I spend the day playing War Machine, which is a a competitive war game and honestly like it’s pretty taxing. It can be stressful and not just War Machine, but any competitive game when you’re truly going like toe-to-toe and and really just trying to outsmart the person across the table from you. Uh why do that instead of of having fun? And really like playing War Machine is fun.

like there is a degree of fun to it, but for me there’s really nowhere else where you get that true challenge in in modern life of like trying to adapt to everchanging situations, trying to like recalculate your strategy, trying to stop somebody else from doing something, trying to like bait them into doing something, trying to come out ahead. And really, it’s it’s the taxing, stressful part of War Machine that is very rewarding. uh even even when you’re losing, you know, it’s still like that challenge that comes from a competitive game uh a PVP game uh is great. You know, it it does something for you more than just having fun does. And I cuz I was sitting there and I was like, I’m having a great time.

Uh what do I want to keep doing this verse like world building exercises through Karath or like a bunch of other or like KDM, you know, in terms of just raw fun by itself. KDM and Karath and and even just role playing in groups. I was doing some of that too. I haven’t really talked about that on the channel. Uh of raw funness.

Those are all more fun than playing War Machine, but they’re not as rewarding in that like I’m having fun, but uh you know, I don’t know. There there’s that challenge that comes of like trying to figure the puzzle out. And they’re you can put puzzles like literal puzzles into tables up RPGs. And it’s funny like when you’re doing narrative uh even narrative war games like the PvP part maybe even isn’t that fun. It’s the emergent narrative still.

But when you’re sitting down and you know I’m trying to beat this person sitting across the table from me and I want I want us both to have fun. Uh like I don’t want to be an about it but I’m still like I’m trying to outsmart them. I’m trying to overcome what they’re trying to do. there is that the stress that is created in a good way. It’s like that good stress that forces your brain to work.

It can cause fatigue, you know, but again in a good way. It’s like it’s like a good workout for your brain. And I don’t get that from other places really that much anymore. Uh so it’s it’s really good. All that to say, I’m really excited to play a lot more War Machine.
