How to Make Scratch Built Terrain Indestructible

/ 5 min read

Day 98 pushing through sickness—sealing a terrain board with Mod Podge and glue to make it nearly indestructible like the old Warhammer Fantasy days.

Day 98: Not Stopping

Pretty sick. But it’s day 98 and we’re not going to stop. We’re going to keep trucking with a quick one.

The Sealing Recipe

Mod Podge. A little bit of black or gray primer mixed in. I’m actually going to brush it on because there are some open pink foam spots. I don’t want the spray to melt them.

Two quick things: I mixed in some water to make it a little bit thinner because Mod Podge can actually cover up some of your detail if you’re not careful. And I’m making sure I cover up this pink edge so I can hit this with spray primer later to get the color I want.

Going Too Thick

I realized in some of these parts I went on too thick. So I’m using a paper towel and just dabbing it to get up the extra. Then I’ll spread it out a little bit better.

The Mod Podge got a little thick so I hit it with Elmer’s glue and isopropyl alcohol to thin it out. Now we’re painted and that Mod Podge didn’t take away any of our detail—which if you’re not careful it definitely will do.

The Layering Process

At this point, this has now been hit with:

  1. The initial straight Elmer’s glue layer that everything stuck to
  2. Then water—50% water, 50% glue—and a little bit of isopropyl alcohol
  3. This has now gone through four layers of that
  4. This final layer is just Mod Podge matte mixed with my gray primer

Why It Works

This is now going to be indestructible. This is how I used to do all my gaming tables back in the Warhammer Fantasy days. It’s how we did all the hills. This is going to be able to take a beating.

Tomorrow I’ll be able to hit it with rattle cans, then come in with the airbrush with some different browns, lock that in, and then it’s time for flock. We’re in the final stretch of this thing.

Almost to 100

We’re closing in on 100 days straight of hobbying and we’re almost at 100 subscribers—which is also pretty cool. Never in my life would have expected that. Thanks again, see you tomorrow for day 99!

All right, pretty sick. But it’s day 98 and we’re not going to stop. We’re not going to We’re going to keep trucking with a quick one. Modge podge. Uh a little bit of black or maybe this might be gray primer.

Um s don’t like it anymore. Going to get this primed. I’m actually going to brush it on cuz there is some open pink spots. I don’t want it to melt. So I’m going to do that.

I’ll be right back. Two quick things. I mixed in some water here uh just to make it so it’s a little bit thinner because you don’t want to wash out that Modge Podge can actually cover up some of your detail if you’re not careful. So, I added in uh some water. And then also, I’m making sure I cover up this edge uh that’s pink.

So, I can hit this with some spray primer and spray paint to actually get the color I want on it. I realiz in some of these parts I went on too thick. So, just I have a paper towel and I’m just dabbing it to make to get up this extra. And then I’ll spread it out a little bit better. and then I’ll get the other half done.

Okay, this is this is where we’re at now. Um I went ahead also I had that I did that Modge Podge a little thick so I hit it with our Elmer’s glue and purple alcohol to thin it out. So now we’re painted and that Modge Podge didn’t take away any of our detail which if you’re not careful it definitely will do. Um, I covered up all of the the edge around the side and I’m still in the garage which is dirty as hell on the floor. But, uh, let this dry.

So, now even though I’m sticking >> Okay, so at this point, this has now been hit. There was the initial Elmer’s glue, just straight Elmer’s glue layer on the board that everything stuck to. Uh, and then water, like 50% water, 50% glue, and then a little bit of isopropyl alcohol. uh that this has now gone through like four layers of that. And then this final layer is just Modge Podge matte mixed in uh with my paint, which this gray primer.

Uh but this this is now going to be indestructible. Like I I’ll I’ll show you tomorrow after this dries. Uh this is how I used to do all my gaming tables uh back in the day, Warner Fantasy. It’s how we did all the all the hills. And this is going to be able to take a beating.

Uh hopefully hopefully tomorrow I’ll feel better and we won’t actually lose any progress. Like I’d hope to do this in the morning so then I could paint it tonight. Uh but at least I got this done. Uh this will be locked in tomorrow. I’ll be able to hit it with rattle cans and then I’ll come in with the airbrush with some different browns and then lock that in and then it’s time for flock.

And then we’re in the final stretch of this thing. Um if you’re still here, thanks for watching. Uh I’ll catch you tomorrow for day 99. Uh it’s crazy. We’re we’re closing in on 100 days straight of hobbying and we’re almost at 100 subscribers which is also pretty cool.

Uh never in my life would have expected that. So thanks again. See you tomorrow.
