When the Airbrush Breaks, Paint a 20-Year-Old Goblin

/ 8 min read

When the airbrush is broken and you're stuck, pull out that 20-year-old goblin from storage. Don't let setbacks stop you from moving forward.

Full Circle

This right here is the first Warhammer model I ever got—one of the goblins from the Goblin Regiment box for Warhammer sixth edition. I still have it. Obviously I never got around to actually painting him, and I think that says a lot.

This is one of the very first models I ever painted. It’s been stripped and repainted once, twice, maybe three times already. I think now it’s time to strip it one more time and paint it again.

The October Project

For October, I am finally going to have the orc and goblin army that I dreamed of when I was a kid. While waiting for my airbrush problems to sort themselves out, I cleaned off my workspace and pulled everything out. I’m going to get this organized—some of it’s been sitting for years—and finally paint it for this month.

When Strategy Blocks You

I’m still working on my Call to Arms stuff. I have an idea in my head of how I wanted to paint it, and it requires an airbrush. I just couldn’t get past the strategy of how I was going to paint it. I was trying to think of alternate schemes or ways I could do it, but I put so much time into thinking through how I was going to do it that I was really hung up on it.

The last couple of days I’ve been slamming videos in right before midnight just because the days have been so crazy. I didn’t want to lose my streak.

Finding Progress Anyway

I was like, “What am I going to do to keep the hobby streak going, to still get hobby progress?” I was really struggling to get anything done or even paint. I didn’t want to let the airbrush thing stop me from making progress.

So I got the space ready to get everything built and start basing done. I also finished the kit bash.

The Kit Bash

I cleaned up that pole so it’s straight now—just put a bunch sprue glue on it and shaped it up. Cleaned up the foot, got the base handled. A couple minor gaps are all filled in with sprue glue and sanded.

I absolutely love how he turned out and I’m excited to get some paint on him. He’s going to be part of a whole Inquisitorial warband after this month.

Avoiding Project Hopping

I was running out of ideas but didn’t want to start a whole new crazy project because it felt like project hopping. In the past I have project hopped so much that nothing gets done.

I’ve kind of done that due to time constraints because Call to Arms made me stop working on the board project. But I’m going to finish the board project. I should have a working airbrush again shortly.

What’s Coming

While waiting to figure out the airbrush, I’m going to start building the Orc and Goblin project. That’s the next thing I’ll actually paint after Call to Arms.

I’ve got longer form videos and more well-produced and edited videos that I’ve been working on and piecing together. Those are coming later in the month. The vlog thing I’m mostly doing for myself, whereas the long form videos are going to try to be actual quality pieces.

The Lesson

Don’t let minor setbacks keep you down. You can always find something to do to make progress.

This right here is the first Warhammer model I ever uh one of the goblins from the Goblin Regiment box for Warhammer. Uh I think sixth edition is when I got it and I still have it. It’s one of the the only ones I still have. There might be a few more parts floating around in here. Uh but obviously I never got around to actually painting him and I think that says a lot.

This is one of the very first models I ever actually painted. And obviously, it’s been stripped and then repainted once, twice, maybe three times already. Uh, a long time ago, I painted it to this. Uh, I think now it’s time for me to to strip it one more time and paint it again. Uh, and it brings me to the next project of the channel.

Uh, for October, I am finally going to have the orc and goblin army uh that I dreamed of when I was a kid. So, while I’m waiting for my airbrush problems to sort themselves out, uh, I cleaned off my workspace and I pulled everything out. I’m going to clean this up and get this actually organized. Got it out of the closet where it’s been sitting for years at this point. Some of it’s been sitting for a very long time at this point and and finally paint it for this month for the channel.

I’m still working on my call to arm stuff. Uh, I have I have that idea in my head of how I wanted to go about painting it and it requires an airbrush and I just I’m not able to get past the strategy of how I was going to paint it and I’m trying to think of like alternate schemes or alternate ways I could do it and I put so much time into thinking through how I was going to do it. I was just really hung up on it and then obviously the last couple of days I’ve been slamming videos in right before midnight just because the days have been so crazy. I didn’t want to lose my streak. Uh, so today I’m I’m definitely feeling it.

I’m dragging it and I was like, man, what am I going to do to get a video out just to like keep it going for myself, to keep the hobby shoot going, to still get hobby progress. And I was really struggling to to get anything done or to even paint. Uh, so I didn’t want to let the airbrush thing stop me from making progress still. So, got the space to get all this built and start getting basing done. Um, and then I also finished the kit bash, which I will show you now.

Here we go. Now, you can see I cleaned up that pole. So, now it’s straight. And what I did was I just put a bunch of sprew glue on it and shaped it up so it’s actually straight to the to the blade. Um, cleaned up the foot, got his base handled.

Uh, there was a couple of like minor gaps and stuff I needed to fix. Those are all filled in with sprew glue now and then sanded. Uh, so I absolutely love how he turned out and I’m excited to get some paint on him. He’s going to be part of a whole Inquisitorial War band that I do uh probably after this month. But again, I just I was I was running out of ideas.

I didn’t want to start like a whole new crazy brand new project just because it felt like I was project hopping and I just I didn’t want to do that. Like I in the past I have project hop so much that nothing gets done. And I’ve kind of done that just due to the time constraints because of call to arms uh making me need to stop working on the board project. But I I’m gonna finish the board project. I should have a working airbrush again shortly.

I’m actually missing a part to use what I uh what I got what I’m borrowing from Dice King. But I’m going to get that all figured out. And while I’m waiting to figure that out, I’m going to just start building the Orcan Goblin project, which is going to be the next thing I actually paint after Call of Arms. Uh so I’ve got a lot of a lot of kind of longer form videos and like more actually like well produced and edited videos that I’ve been working on and piecing together. So, those are all coming later in the month.

I want to try my hand at actually trying to make like real quality videos and not just the vlog thing. The vlog thing I’m mostly doing for myself, whereas the long form videos are going to try to be like actual like real entertainment, real quality pieces. So, I’m excited for that. Thanks for watching. And don’t let minor setbacks and stuff like that keep you down.

Like, you can always find something to do to make progress.
