What is Last Mile
Last Mile is “a solo miniatures game about surviving in a dead world,” from Black Site Studios, the people behind Don’t Look Back. You guide a lone survivor down an unknown road as they try to make it home, “one mile at a time.”
It’s a zine. Black Site’s zines are printed on recycled, staple-bound paper, and the studio is upfront about what that means: “This is a highly experimental game.” It says zine games are never as in-depth as a mainstream game and are meant to be played “in a very casual way.” It went on sale in May 2025.
How it plays
- The road is a deck of cards. You draw from the Road Deck, a standard deck of playing cards, to build a random stretch of your path. Every card is a new mile, and it might hold hazards, enemies, or “moments of quiet tension.”
- A small table. You play on an area about 12 by 20 inches and physically move your survivor across the terrain.
- One d10 roll. Roll equal to or above your stat to succeed. Your survivor has three stats, Attack, Defend, and Soul, and you split the values 6, 6, and 5 between them.
- Fast, deadly fights. Enemies use basic rules and act on their own, following simple behaviours.
- Two tracks to watch. You manage Health and Crave. Black Site puts it plainly: “Health is your life. Crave is your need.” If either hits zero, your journey might end. Along the way you find gear, take injuries, and make hard calls to keep going.
How to start
- Get the zine. The Last Mile zine is $9.99 as a PDF or $14.99 as a physical book from Black Site Studios.
- Print your survivor. A free STL of the survivor miniature is included.
- Find some bandits. You need 3 to 5 bandit miniatures, one melee type and one ranged type.
- Gather the rest. A standard deck of playing cards, a handful of d10s, a pen and paper for Health, Crave, and gear, and terrain for the road: one or two buildings, plenty of cars, trees, and rubble.
