What is Age of Fantasy: Skirmish
Age of Fantasy: Skirmish is the small-scale fantasy game from OnePageRules (OPR), created and designed by Gaetano Ferrara. Each side brings 10 to 15 models, and a game takes 40 to 60 minutes. It’s set in Age of Fantasy, OPR’s world “where new realms struggle to survive over the ashes of old empires.”
The core rules are free, and they really are short: two pages, plus a 16-page Beginner’s Guide that walks through everything with diagrams. The current version is v3.5.1, from November 2025.
It’s the skirmish-sized sibling of OPR’s bigger Age of Fantasy army game, and it shares a world with Age of Fantasy: Quest. You aren’t locked to OPR’s own minis either. Other studios carry a “Compatible with OPR” banner, which means they make models that fit OPR army lists, or OPR army lists for their models.
How it plays
- Alternating activations. Players take turns activating one unit each. Whoever finished activating first last round goes first in the next.
- One action per unit. Hold (stand and shoot), Advance 6” and shoot, Rush 12”, or Charge 12” into melee.
- Two stats. Units have a Quality value to hit and a Defense value to block. Hit on your Quality, and the defender rolls to block each hit with their Defense.
- Wound effects, not hit points. A model that takes wounds rolls a die, adding one per wound marker. A 1–5 leaves it Shaken, and a 6+ knocks it out. Tough models only start rolling once they’ve taken enough wounds.
- Objectives. Games run four rounds over D3+2 objective markers, and whoever holds the most at the end wins.
- Morale. Once an army is down to half its units, every unit tests at the end of each round. Shaken units that fail again rout.
The special rules (Caster, Fear, Regeneration, Stealth and the rest) fit on the second page. Casters get spell tokens each round, and friendly models nearby can spend their own tokens to help or hinder a cast.
How to start
- Download the free rules. The game page has the core rules, the Beginner’s Guide, mission cards, campaign rules, solo and co-op rules, and a Horde Mode, all free.
- Build a list on Army Forge. OPR’s free web app keeps the latest unit profiles, so you don’t have to buy army books to play.
- Get minis in whatever format suits you. OPR sells its minis as STLs on Patreon and MyMiniFactory, pre-printed in resin on Etsy, as some plastic kits, and as paper minis on DriveThruRPG, some of them free. The free Welcome Pack has Human Empire and Vampiric Undead units, forest terrain, a ruler, and tokens.
- Want more rules? The Advanced Rulebook is $4.99 on DriveThruRPG. It adds terrain generators, extra missions and side-missions, advanced casting, magic items, random events, fog of war, command points, city fighting, and multiplayer rules.
Free vs. paid
The game itself costs nothing: core rules, the Beginner’s Guide, the extra modes, and Army Forge are all free. OPR makes its money from the paid Advanced Rulebook and expansions (narrative campaigns, a mission pack, and short story collections, $4.99 to $9.99 each), and from miniatures and its Patreon, which starts at $5 a month. OPR says patrons get “extra content, exclusive updates, early access, rulebooks, point calculators, miniatures and much more.”
The next version, v3.6, just finished an open beta across OPR’s games, including this one. It ran on a separate beta build of Army Forge until 27 September 2026.
