KDM Settlement 1 Episode 3 - Our First Hunt

/ 20 min read

The first proper hunt phase in Kingdom Death Monster - crafting gear, random events, and preparing to face the White Lion again.

Back With a Live One

It’s been a crazy couple of days, so I had to dig into the vault of pre-recorded stuff. But today—Sunday—we’re getting back to actual live content.

Setup Clarification

Cleaned up the table. Now we’re looking at a true 4x4 game space. If you have a Warmachine table, you’re good. I’ll be able to keep this set up forever since I’m the only one who comes down here.

Resource Card Rules

Important clarification: when you pull resource cards and the rules say “put them back in the box,” they’re not actually archived gone forever. You spend them or document that you have them, then they go back so next time you fight the White Lion, you have the same likelihood of getting all the resources.

That makes me feel better about crafting.

Gear Loadout Strategy

Not randomizing builds—a helpful comment warned me the game is random and difficult enough.

My Logic

Sophia the Strong gets all the armor. Four pieces of rawhide going to one person because:

  • Even with one piece each, survivors can still get killed on an unarmored hit location (like last time—Tmicus had cloth armor but got hit in the head and died)
  • Two fresh characters with nothing on them? I don’t care if they die
  • If Sophia dies, I don’t lose the gear anyway

Weapons:

  • One bone darts for ranged support
  • Three bones for a bone club on Sophia

Going all eggs in one basket with Sophia: full armor and the substantial melee weapon. The goal is a tank with range support, and two disposable characters along for the ride. Way better than last time.

The Hunt Phase

Setting up the hunt board—every showdown has a little diagram showing card placement. We’re choosing level one again.

Hunt Events

Prowling Lion - The lion hunts something else. Move it one space away. Starts with Ground Fighting in play.

Fields of Golden Grass - Gained +1 courage but then had to roll on the event table.

Heavy Mist - Rolled odd, so we’re lost. Roll again.

Stone Feet - This is where it gets wild. Insane survivors are convinced they’ve reached the underside of the world and clutch the ground for dear life. Roll once on the hunt event table for EACH insane survivor.

Only two of ours are insane (the new characters), so we got lucky.

The Statue with the Sword

Sword in the Statue - A one-eyed statue twice as tall as any man with a hammer in each of its six hands, beating a red hot sword.

Orcus tries to grab it… rolls a two plus one hunt XP = three. Quick grab but not quick enough—Dismembered Arm severe injury. He loses his arm forever and gets a bleeding token.

Nobody else is attempting that.

The Mask Salesman

A traveling mask salesman offers special wares. We shuffle the mask gear and draw… the Death Mask.

No affinities? Gain +4 luck but suffer -4 to all severe injury rolls.

The price? Archive one gear. Orcus loses his armor but gains the mask. Glass cannon build—if he gets hit he’s probably dead, but he’s going to roll a lot of crits.

I’m actually happy with that.

Bold Story Event

Orcus triggered Bold from gaining courage. During the hunt phase, that gives him the “Prepared” ability—expect the unexpected. Rolled a seven for +1 understanding.

Ready for the Showdown

The party:

  • Orcus - Two survival, three insanity, one armor on waist, death mask, bone darts, courage and understanding boosted
  • Sophia the Strong - Full rawhide armor, bone club, +1 strength
  • Clinton Extra - Fresh character, just along for the ride
  • Collip - Sitting out at the Lantern Horde

Innovations: Language only. Settlement Principle: Cannibalize.

Let’s hunt.

up. I’m back with a live one finally. It’s been a crazy couple of days, so I had to I had to dig into the vault of the pre-recorded stuff to not miss my upload streak. Uh been painting, been hobbying every day. Uh but today, the Sunday, I’m getting back to actually like you’re going to see the stuff I actually >> So, I want to do just a couple of quick updates about uh the settlement phase before we So, I I had this stuff back here and said I just I was lazy and I cleaned up this side of it.

So now like we’re looking at a true like we’re we’re taking up a true 4x4 uh game space to play this. So if you have a war machine table, you’re good. Uh I’ll be able to keep this set up forever. You know, I’m only one who comes down here, luckily. Uh but I could definitely see that being an issue if you’re like a normal human.

So uh I’m going to move my settlements and all that stuff over there to the side. Uh I pulled these resource cards, right? And in my head by pulling these resource cards when I use them, it says put them back in the box. I was kind of imagining like you pull everything out of the box. If something goes back into the box, it’s like gone.

That’s really not the case. So, I I take these resource cards, I put them face up. I either spend them now or I document that I have them on my works like my settlement worksheet before I go to the next hunt. And then these go back into the box so that next time I fight the White Lion, I still have the the same likelihood of getting all the resources. they’re not actually like archived archived gone for good.

So, that makes me feel a little bit better. Like, if I want to just keep finding the white line, I think I could. So, I’m going to try to use as much as I can to build things. And I’m pretty sure I’m right about that. Uh, let me know in the comments.

And also, I saw two people help me out with some stuff I was doing. So, now when it says like return to the box, I’m just going to assume that means like return it to the to the deck. Oh, I got another plant. Um, I’ve had it, but I don’t think I’ve had it on camera. I got to clean everything up.

I’m terrible at cleaning. Uh, I have so little time down here. I just spend it all doing. But if I did spend the time to clean, I can probably do more stuff down here. That is the endless cycle.

All right, so I’m going to finish cleaning up and then hopefully do another another I should put something on my ceiling over here so it looks cool uh when I flip to this view. But uh second thing, I am not going to randomize the builds. Uh just I I kind of thought maybe I’d be screwing myself and then uh there was a very helpful comment that that pretty much said uh don’t do that. It’s going to be random and and difficult enough. So I’ve got my cards and my equipment.

I’m going to look at what is possible for me to make and so tell you where we come out in my logic. >> I’m going to show you what am I thinking here. Right. I’ve got three or four hide cards. So, that’s pretty close to a full full suit of raw hide armor.

Um I’m going to make the armor and I’m just going to give it to one person. Uh probably Sophia the strongest cuz she has that plus one strength. Um and a not too terrible drawback. At least I hope not with her jaw being broken. Uh, I don’t want to just make one piece of armor and give one to each person because like there’s still a very high chance that they wouldn’t get hit on their armor and they can still get killed as we saw last time.

So even he had cloth armor but he got hit in the head so he just died. So [snorts] one I think probably if I were going to only put one piece of armor on everybody, I think I’d put it on their head and I thought about that because they only have one box on the head. So it’s probably super important to protect everybody’s head. But I’m going into this next round with two totally fresh guys because one one person died, one person’s over here uh doing stuff in the lantern horde. Uh and essentially I don’t care if those two characters died because they don’t have anything on them, right?

So I’m not going to worry about armoring them. I’m going to put all four on Sophia the strong. And then the real question now becomes I have four bones. I’m definitely going to buy at least one thing of bone darts cuz I want somebody ranged. So, I’m thinking like, do I buy three bone darts and like either a bone blade or a bone dagger?

Or do I buy one bone dart and then spend three bones to get a bone club? Or do I do I spend one to get a bone dart on one person and then spend three to get a bone club and put that on Sophia the strong with her full armor? I’m putting all my eggs in one basket. Um, it’s not like even if she dies, it’s not like I lose the gear. And last game, like two people didn’t even really do anything.

So, if I go in, sorry, my dog’s going crazy upstairs. Uh, if I go in with range support and I go in with a tank and a pretty substantial melee weapon, that’s way better than I did last time and I two >> two guys that are just along for the ride, you know. Um, I think that’s the route I’m going to go. I don’t know if it’d be better to space the weapons out. I’m pretty sure I’m I’m correct in my thinking on giving one person all the armor first and then next time maybe I’ll give everybody helmets.

We’ll see what we get. But the only part I’m not sure about is I’m putting all my eggs in one basket, which I think is probably pretty if she dies like what do I do from there? But also like I beat it with stones before, you know. All right, here’s where we stand. So Orcus, he has uh two survival, three insanity, one armor on the waist, a little bit of courage.

Uh Sophia the strong needy to add her her honorific. She has two survival right now, three brain, uh, one armor. Oh, I got to I got to clean her head injury, but one armor everywhere. Uh, and then Clinton extra. Uh, just bog standard fresh rerolls.

Uh, I erase Tmicus. Uh, if somebody like Sophia, I’m definitely going to save for a sheet now cuz something’s happened to her. But if anybody is just like a fresh one and they get killed, I we’ll just reuse it. Clappy’s over here at the lantern horde has to sit this hunt out. And then we have organ grinder, bonesmith, and skin rebuilt.

And our only innovation is language right now. and we are cannibal. >> Okay, so we’re about to we’re ready to go. Um I’m still not quite sure about the the three bones I spent on the bone mace, but I don’t plan on spending any more on on bone weapons just cuz a lot of them break. So probably it’s going to that’s going to be the only thing I spend on building bone weapons cuz a lot of them are frail and it just seems something I saw to build something that’s going to break.

So I’ll probably either wait until I can do the sky or the bone sickle cuz they aren’t frail I don’t think. Uh so I don’t want to spend a ton of money getting everybody anything else. So, I think we’re going to be good hopefully. Okay. So, this is the board that I had to the side, but now to I’m reading to do the hunt phase.

Uh, you have to flip it over. So, I kind of want a second one of these. That’s the way I’m doing the setup. Okay. So, showing how to set this up.

Every I guess every showdown has a little diagram. So, that’s how I know where to put the cards. So, there’s a card here. There. the bosses.

When we get to that space, there’s one there, then here, and here, and then we’re choosing to fight level one. So, that’s why we know he goes into that space. And then there’s just basic hunt events. And also, if we had anything that would let us gather herbs or or mine materials, we could also add those cards now. But we don’t have anything.

We’re not we’re not at that level yet. So, now we’re set up to go into the hunt phase. Okay. Okay, I don’t really know what we’re in for. I got the rule book.

I got it set up. Let’s just start drawing cards. So, we move here to this first space and we see what it is. Prowling lion. While survivors stalk the white lion, the monster hunts something else.

Move the white lion one space away from the survivors on the hunt. Bored in pursuit of its prey, the white lion starts the showdown with ground fighting in play. To the next step, next phase. Fields of fields of golden grass lay ahead. The event revealer may choose to avoid the planes and roll twice on the hunt event table before moving on the hunt board.

Otherwise, each survivor gains plus one courage and the event revealer rolls on the table. All right, time to roll it. Six. The survivors circle the tall grass lost. Roll on the hunt event table before moving on the hunt board.

All right, so it’s D100. Uh, black will be the 10ens. I can’t roll into a box. 39. Heavy mist.

A heavy mist involves the survivors obscuring their lantern. Right. Roll 1d10. If the result is even, the survivors stumble in the right direction. If the result is odd, they get turned around.

roll again on the hunt table before moving on the event board. If the showdown begins, the monster ambushes. All right, so D10 is a nine again. So that means they roll again on the event table. What I say black is the 10ens 63 feet.

The stone faces ahead are placed by an expanse of stone feet spreading up from the ground. The survivors walk soulto soul with the feet. If any survivor is insane, well, everybody is insane right now. They are convinced they have reached the underside of the world. They clutch the ground for dear life, terrified of falling off.

The rockus terror slows the survivors and attracts unwanted attention. Roll once on the hunt event table for each insane survivor before moving on the hunt board. If any of these roles result in feet, ignore it and reroll. If the survivors are ins if all survivors, they fall off the underside of the world. The survivors are dead.

Unless the settlement chose survival of the fittest. If they did, the survivors bite down hard on the feet and their teeth grind against the stone as they refuse to let go. At once, the feet shatter, revealing an ordinary stone beneath. Set all survivors inscanity to zero. Each survivor suffers the shattered jaw.

Severe head injury. Do not roll. additional hunt events caused by feat. Uh, luckily only two of them are insane because two of them were new characters. So, we got lucky there.

But we need to roll again. So, here’s for Orcus. It is an eight. Oh, wait. I need to roll D100, don’t I?

Yes. Okay. 88. The sword in the statue. A one-eyed statue twice as tall as any man sits before a great anvil with a hammer in each of its six hands transfixed.

The survivors watch the statue beat a red hot sword that lies across the anvil. Each survivor, starting with the event revealer and proceeding clockwise, may make one attempt to grab the sword from the anvil. If they do, they gain plus one courage, roll the d10, and add their hunt XP to a roll. So, I’m not going to look at the table. Uh, I’m just going to try to roll it.

We’ll use the red one cuz it’s a fire one. So, Orcus is going to try to grab it. He’s insane. He’s seeing these feet and the sword. So, if they do, they gain plus one courage, a roll of d10, and add hunt.

So, he’s got one hunt XP on him. He gets a courage uh that triggers the bold story event. So, all right. Nothing to it but to roll it. Two.

I don’t know if rolling high or low is bad, but I’m assuming two is probably bad. All right, we get a three. So, you make a quick Oh, awesome. We make a quick grab for the sword, but not quick enough. Suffer the dismembered arm.

Severe arm injury. All right. He loses his arm forever and he gains a bleeding token. won’t actually and realize it’s not possible for anybody to grab it. So, uh I’m not going to make an attempt to grab it right now.

I think uh I think we’ll move on. Not going to be that silly. Okay, he lost his arm. So, now uh this is the second roll for Sophia’s Insanity. So, I’ll roll it real quick.

Uh it is 102. So, I guess we’ll take that zero. It says two, not 102. The survivors are overcome by a sudden chill and breath seizing in their lungs. The survivors teeth chatter mercilessly.

All survivors lose monster level survival. I don’t think I have that. Oh, duh. Also, all survivors lose one survival because the monster is level one. Awesome.

At the center of a sudden frost is a perfectly preserved corpse. If the settlement has cannibalize, the event revealer gains one random basic resource. Oh, awesome. If the settlement has graves, don’t have those. If the settlement has a metamory, we don’t have those.

So, we do get a random resource. So, let’s see. Going to shuffle up the resource deck. Hey, so something good happened finally. Uh, we get Monster Hide.

Cool. Okay. So, now now we move on to the next one. A little bit scared. Oh, we get a random event.

Tens and ones. Oh, I guess I had these backwards based on how they do it. So, we’re rolling on the event table. Tens. Tens and ones.

So we Wow, this is So the card is a white three and a black five. We got a white five and a black three. Interesting. 53. This is cool.

I wondered like where like I knew bad things could happen to you. So obviously this is where that comes in. So this is mask salesman. The survivors meet a traveling mask salesman on the road. He insists he has special wares to offer.

Shuffle one copy of each mask gear from the maskmaker settlement location and draw one at random. The salesman is offering this mask. The event revealer rolls a D 100 to determine the price and then gains the mask. Uh, okay. So, I don’t know who I guess I should have been paying attention to who the actual event roller was.

So, uh, D Orcus and Sophia. I’ll say now it’s it’s all right. So, let me get those mats out. Okay. Okay.

So, I want to pull the mass out of my binder sheet. So, there’s six mass. D6 to roll it. It’s a six. Uh, one, two, three, four.

Or I guess it’d be this one. The death mask. I think if you have no if you have no affinities gain plus4 luck and suffer minus four to all severe injury roles. So I don’t know what uh I don’t have any affinities. Okay.

So uh I did Toginus was the event revealer and now I guess there is a price to pay. So, let’s see what that is. A six. The salesman slowly gestures for an offering. Uh, archive one gear of choice.

Oh, man. All right, I got to keep the founding stone. So, he’s going to lose his armor. So, cough armor going bye-bye. But he gets this mask.

So he gets plus4 luck, but minus four to all severe injury rolls and rolling low seems to suck. So if he gets hit, he’s going to die, but he is going to be rolling a lot of crits. So I kind of like like glass cannon build. That’s pretty cool, actually. Uh very cool.

Honestly, I’m happy with that. So something good is happening to us again. All right, so now uh we move on to this blank space because there’s no card there because that’s where the lion was. We roll uh on the event table again. And now we we’ll do a proper the white ones, the tens.

  1. This is fun. I’m like I’m just kind of jamming out. Living out. I need to get upstairs.

But uh having fun right now. Want to finish the hunt phase. Test of courage. Lava flows from the eyes of a huge grimacing stone face. Its gritted teeth hold a worn sword.

Oh, you know I’m going to try to grab it. If there are any survivors with six plus courage. Oh, don’t have that. Choose one to brave the lava. They gain the adventure sword rare gear.

If no one can test, the group moves on with a feeling of inadequacy. I certainly have a feeling of inadequacy. If the settlement already has the adventure sword in storytelling, the stories share stories of bravery. All right, so I don’t have that. Don’t want to keep reading.

Um, man, but also this just reminded me that I triggered the bold courage story event. So, I don’t know if I do that now. I need to double check on. Okay, so I just turned to the bold page and if it has occurred during the hunt phase, so there’s actually rules. I guess I should have I’m worried about showing all the pages of the rule booklet because of the art, but uh I guess because the triumph corresponding to the current game phase.

Uh that’s pretty cool. So you can only gain this once in a lifetime. It is the hunt phase. Expect the unexpected. You are prepared to face any mindbending trials at a moment’s notice.

Where others may falter, you forge ahead, meeting the journey head on. Gain the following ability. My phone just died. I guess I keep thinking it’s plugged in and it’s not. So, uh, we trigger the bold story event.

And I was just double checking on how the hunt worked while I was waiting for my phone to charge back up. So, he gets prepared. And now we roll uh a d10 to see what we get. We rolled a seven. Uh, I don’t usually use these, so I’m not very good at rolling into them, but a seven is gain plus one understanding.

Easy peasy. What?
