Planning the Hobby Room, Attempt Number Six

I've tried to turn this basement into a real studio six times and never finished once. This time I started with graph paper and paper cutouts.

I Have a Finishing Problem

I’m putting this at the front of the video, because I think I legitimately have a problem. I’ve been cleaning and eBaying for months, and I’ve sold a lot of Warhammer and miniatures, and I’m in the final stretch. But as I’m going through it now, I’m finding unfinished project after unfinished project.

And it’s not only the hobby. I’ve got five books going on Goodreads between real books and audiobooks. I’m in the middle of three different Greek books I’m studying. I’m in the middle of a few other weird books I’m studying that I’m not going to talk about. Nothing in my life is getting done. I just start a new thing, new thing, new thing, and I don’t finish any of them, and it’s hitting me pretty hard.

It was hitting me before, but I couldn’t name it. Now that I can, the goal is to get all this cleaned up for real, 100% done, and then start finishing things. Is that wisdom? I don’t know. It’s time to turn this mess into a studio instead of a room I throw stuff into.

Six Attempts In

I’ve started this process six times. Not today, but six times across the history of this channel I’ve recorded myself saying it’s time to clean this place up and make a real studio. I never actually finish, and then I mess it all up again. So hopefully today’s the day.

I’m somebody who has to write everything down. Hang on, I’ve lost my pen. That’s what this pocket is for. It’s the pen pocket.

My grocery store put a bunch of composition notebooks on sale for about two bucks, and it’s graph paper, and the graph paper takes fountain pens, which is crazy. So I bought a ton of them. I’m going to sit down and approach this differently.

Sorted Is Not the Same as Usable

I’ve done the version where you just put stuff away. I get the space clean, but the space itself is never usable. I never get it doing what I want it to do.

It looks crazy over there, but it’s all sorted now, so that’s progress. Everything’s in boxes. I took everything off the shelves except those books right there and put it on the floor, sorted, and that’s where it’s been sitting for a couple of weeks. I have to put it all back, but I want to rearrange it so I actually get something out of the room.

Also, finishing our Tanner Simpson miniature puts us at 31 painted, which seems like it should be so much more. That’s the eye-opening part. If I’d finished everything I’ve started painting on this channel, not even counting the goblins, we’d be closer to 100. I have to get stuff finished. And part of that is that the space is as scattered as my brain is.

The Ceiling Fan Problem

Blank canvas, rough start. I’m not an engineer, so every box on the graph paper is a square foot. The big room is 20 and a half feet one way and 15 the other. There are double doors into a smaller room that’s about 5 feet in, and I ran out of boxes. That smaller room is pretty squared away already.

I marked out the ceiling fan and made a card for it so I could set it on top of the plan. I joke about it, but I walk into that fan every single day. At least three times a week, and I only come down here four times a week.

Normally I wouldn’t put a big gaming table right there. But the fan and the lights are directly above it, which means better light on the table. What worried me is the fan is three and a half feet across with the blades, so if I’m standing at the table, am I going to have those things right on my head?

I checked, because that’s basically the setup right now. When I’m standing at the table I don’t notice the blades at all. I’ve never been hit while I’m playing. Only while I’m walking. So the table stays under the fan.

What the Room Needs to Do

I made little cutouts of all the furniture that matters. Two big bookshelves, roughly a foot by foot each on the plan. A 2 by 1 shelf that was tucked in front of the door, which is a terrible spot, and was supposed to be temporary and became not temporary. My big toolbox with all the paints and hobby supplies. Everything else in here is on wheels, and anything on wheels goes under the gaming table.

What I actually need out of the room is an airbrush booth, a painting and building and assembly space, and the big table. That table does Warmachine, anything that needs 6 by 4, or a 2 by 2 thrown on top. Any game I want to play, I can play on it.

And I want to keep it clean. I want to stop using half of it for storage so I can leave a game set up and take a turn here and there, especially with how much solo stuff I’m doing now.

The RPG nook is handled. Most of the built-in shelves are RPG books, and I’ve got a fold-out wire rack for my laptop if I’m doing online play, even though I don’t really like virtual tabletops.

Solving for Kingdom Death

What I really need to solve for is a permanent Kingdom Death setup.

I’ve got a pegboard here I haven’t been able to use because there’s so much junk in front of it. And I’ve got a 4 by 2 and a half foot workbench sitting in the laundry room that I used for 3D printing and don’t use for that anymore. So maybe this becomes the airbrush booth and painting bench, and the 6-foot table slides down in front of the pegboard.

Then I can sort all my Kingdom Death tokens and accoutrements there. I can 3D print deck boxes, hang them on the pegboard, put shelves on it. That pegboard is bolted straight into the concrete foundation, which I don’t know was smart, but that’s how it is, so it’ll hold a ton.

KDM needs the space. The showdown board is 2 by 3 and the hunt board is another 3 feet. Hunt board one way, showdown board the other, and it just barely fits on the 6-foot table. I also need room for the chair, so I’m giving myself a 3-foot buffer around the table. With real measurements instead of eyeballing, the walkway comes out around two and three quarter feet, which is no big deal.

Part of me wants to pop these doors off and hang a shower curtain on a rod instead. It’d be a cool way to enter the RPG den.

Zine Racks and Maps

I felt like this wasn’t being productive, so I went and did other things and came back to it. At first I thought I was wasting my time.

Then I realized what the plan actually bought me. I can put the cubes over here, and then build out zine storage racks for all the A5 books and zines so they display on both sides. Same for my maps. I’ve got framed maps and I don’t want them permanently mounted, and it’s hard to put screws in anything here because most of the walls are concrete.

So, zine racks and map racks on that wall, with some custom lighting built into them. That’ll be a video for the future. But I think this is the final layout, and now it’s time to sell a bunch of stuff and get it out of here so I can actually rearrange.

One Shelf for Works in Progress

That was the easy part. Now the hard part.

The stuff over here is going to long-term storage. Some shelf stuff, Tupperware containers. I spilled coffee on this box a couple of minutes ago and have to clean that up. A bunch of Gunpla I’m probably not getting to soon, though I’ve already done a Gunpla purge and this is what remains, and I want to build all of it. My chaos dwarfs. Confrontation models, legit ones. I want to get better at old-school style painting, so I’ll practice on a couple of things first and do those Sunday.

The rest of this is going to be my works in progress shelf, and I’m going to limit myself to it. No outstanding projects beyond what fits there. I’ll hang a little shower curtain so I can pull it back, grab something to work on, and that’s where everything I plan to work on for the next year lives.

If it doesn’t fit on that shelf or in long-term storage behind me, it’s got to go.

$200 a Day to eBay

So I’m going to try to get $200 worth of stuff onto eBay every day.

Starting with this old Grymkin stuff. Now that I can 3D print it, I don’t need the real metal, and I think the Skin and Moans is resin. It’s kind of rough, so it’ll probably go cheap.

Wow, there are a lot of people selling the Steamforged STLs on eBay. I’m not going to do that. And I want to be clear, unsarcastically, I’m definitely not doing that. I think it’s pretty messed up.

Okay. $200 on eBay, starting to get organized down here, and I still have to get my Warmachine in. Pretty good day. I don’t know if it was a good video, but it was a good hobby day.

See you tomorrow.

I’m going to put this at the front of the video. Uh, but I realized I definitely like I think I legitimately have a problem because I’ve been cleaning and eBaying for months and months and months and I’ve sold lots and lots of of Warhammer and miniatures and I’m in the final stretch, but I’m like as I’m going through now, I’m just finding unfinished project after unfinished project and I’m listening to audiobooks and I’m looking at Goodreads, which which I don’t actually support anymore cuz Amazon bought them. But I what tangent I’m not going to go on right now, but I have I’m like on Goodreads I got five books in progress between real life books and audiobooks and then like I’m in the middle of like three different Greek books I’m studying. I’m in the middle of multiple other books that I’m not going to talk about that I’m studying. Uh, not that I’m going to talk about but I’m in other three other weird books that I’m studying and I I’m just like nothing in my life is getting done or I’m just like starting new thing new thing new thing new thing and I’m not finishing anything and it’s really like hitting me pretty hard.

So it’s it it was hitting me before but I couldn’t name it and now that I realize that I am just bouncing around from stuff and not really finishing anything, my goal is to get all this cleaned up for real 100% done and I’ll start finishing stuff. Uh, that’s my word of wisdom. Is that wisdom? I don’t even All right, it’s time to turn this mess into a studio, into a usable space instead of just a space where a bunch of stuff is thrown into it. So, uh, let’s get quits by the ceiling fan and get into it.

I’ve started this process six times now. Uh, not today. Like six times throughout the the history of the channel I’ve recorded it’s time to clean this place up to make a real studio and I never actually finish cleaning it up and then I mess it all up again. So, uh, hopefully today’s the day I I’m going to do it. What’s up?

Hi. So, uh, I’m somebody that has to write everything down. So, I’ve been uh, I’ve lost my pen. Man, that’s what this pocket’s for. It’s the pen pocket.

And recently my grocery store put a bunch of these composition notebooks for sale on sale for like two bucks, I think. But it’s graph paper, and the graph paper takes fountain pens, which is crazy. So, I got a ton of these guys. I got to I got to sit down. I’m going to approach it differently.

I’ve done the thing where you just like put stuff away and and I never like I never I get the space clean, but the space itself is never actually usable. I never get it to what I want it to be doing. And you can see like it looks crazy over there, but it’s all sorted now. So, that’s I’ve made progress. Everything’s sorted.

Everything’s in boxes. I took everything except for those books right there, right right there. I took everything off of shelves and I put it on my floor, sorted. And that’s where it’s been sitting for a couple of weeks now. So, I got to put everything back away, but I want to rearrange everything so that I actually get what I want out of the space.

So, that’s what I’m going to figure out real quick. Oh, also, by finishing our Tanner Simpson miniature, we are at 31 miniature painted, which is seems like it should be so much more. And it’s really eye-opening because if I painted or if I finished everything I had started painting on this channel, it’d be at like overall just over not even counting the goblins cuz that was a ton of models. If you take those out and just count everything else, we’d be closer to 100. So, I got to get stuff finished.

And part of that is just like the space is as scattered as my brain is. So, it’s time to figure that out. All right, we got a blank a blank canvas, a very rough start. And I’m not I’m not an engineer, right? So, I’ve got every box is a square foot.

This this big like this this room right here is it’s 20 and 1/2 ft this way and 15 ft this way. And then I have like double doors right here into the smaller room, and I ran out of boxes. This smaller room is actually from here off is 5 ft. But that room is pretty pretty squared away. There’s not there’s not a ton of room to put stuff in there.

I have a I have my big desk in there and then there’s inbuilt shelving units here and then there’s like another smaller closet area inside this big old big closet area kind of thing. So, uh and there’s This is like AC stuff is here and then there’s a utility closet over here uh that’s actually like underneath the stairs and there’s stuff here. There’s a little bit of room here that I think I can store like foam and and wood and like scrap materials that I don’t really care if they get too too gnarly with spiders cuz the spiders are are everywhere down here. But, I’ve got this huge room and now it’s time to figure out what What to do with it? Like, what do I even What do I need it to do?

Okay, so honestly I would normally not This is where I I just marked this out for the ceiling fan and I made a card for it so I could put it on top. I I joke about it, but I walk into the ceiling fan every single day. And so normally I wouldn’t I wouldn’t want to put a big ass gaming table like right cuz I got like my Right now my my computer’s over here. I come in here. So, like it’s right in the way of where I’m trying to go and then these doors swing out, you know?

So, normally I wouldn’t want to put like a big thing right here, but I hit my head on this ceiling fan every day. At At least like three times a week and I only come down here like four times a week. So, so I’m thinking I’m going to put the table and two like if the fan if the fan and the lights are like right above the table, uh it’s just better lighting on the table. But, what I’m worried about is like the ceiling fan The ceiling fan’s 3 and 1/2 ft uh with like the blades. So, that’s kind of the blades.

So, if if the table is there and I’m like standing here, am I going to have those like fans like like right on my head? So, uh I can’t I can’t really move the ceiling fan. It’s definitely uh I just looked at it again. It’s definitely not an option cuz it it’d just be a pain in the ass and probably not worth it. So, I’m just kind of like I got to This is the biggest piece of furniture in here and I got to keep it cuz that’s my gaming table for like everything.

So, it has wheels. So, like right now it’s like right now it’s here. So, I can I can wheel it around and I plan on keeping this open so like I can push it out of the way if I’m not going to use it anytime soon or like figure out where I can throw it, you know? But, I I don’t know. If I’m playing, I got to see cuz like right now I stand underneath it like cuz the ceiling fan’s here and then this table is here and I it’s like this is the exact setup right now.

Just double-checking. So, so I’m standing like here when I’m using the table and I don’t really notice the blades, you know? So, actually I’m not too worried about that. At first I was, but it’d be even better right here cuz I’m like directly underneath the blades when I’m playing and they I’ve never been hit when I’m standing there playing. It’s only when I’m walking.

All right. So, I made uh little little cutouts of all the furniture in here that actually matters and this is my current uh really dumb ass layout. So, uh I’ve got two big bookshelves. Uh details right here roughly a foot by foot. They’re not actually a foot by foot, but for what it matters.

Uh and then there’s a 2 by 1 shelf I had tucked here right in front of the door actually, which is a terrible spot for it. Uh but it I was supposed to be a temporary thing and it turned into a not temporary thing. Uh I’ve got my big toolbox right here with bunch of paints and hobby supplies. Uh I got a little two 2 by 1 foot shelf tucked in there and everything else I have in here is like on wheels. So, I’m actually anything that I have on wheels, like these little carts of trays, I’m going to put underneath the gaming table.

So, I didn’t I didn’t make carts for them, but now I really got to figure out uh what I want to do and the main things that I want are hobby like airbrush airbrush booth, which is on this desk right here. This is where I’m sitting right now. Airbrush space, a painting and building and assembly space, and then on this table I can do War Machine, I can do any game that requires 6 by 4, or throw a 2 by 2 on top of it, you know, any any game I want to play I can do on here. And I want to keep this clean. I don’t want I just want to get stop using half of this for storage.

I want to keep that clean so I can keep the games up on it. So if I’m just taking a turn here or there, especially cuz I’m doing so much solo stuff now. Uh so I want to keep that cleaner, and then I have all these shelves there’s inbuilt shelves in here. Uh this this is going to be my RPG nook. So I wanted most of these shelves are RPG books.

I’ve got a couple other things, but I’m going to I kind of got that solved cuz I want to have a section for RPGs that’ll be there. And if I’m doing stuff online or online play, I can I have a little fold-out wire rack thing that I can throw my laptop on and stream from there for like virtual tabletops, even though I don’t really like virtual tabletops, but that’s there. So that RPG section is handled. The War Machine, the war game section, and the indie solo games are handled, but really what I need to solve for is a permanent Kingdom Death setup. And so I had this pegboard here.

I haven’t even been able to really use it cuz there’s so much in front of it. So I’m I I have this other 4 by 2 and 1/2 foot workbench that’s in the laundry right now. I’ve been using for 3D printing, but I don’t really use it in 3D printing anymore. Um and so it’s just kind of there. So what I’m kind of thinking about doing here is maybe maybe this becomes my airbrush booth and like painting bench, and then this 6-ft guy uh I slide down over here in front of the pegboard.

I can sort all my my Kingdom Death like tokens and and all the accoutrements that come there. And maybe I think I can like 3D print some deck boxes and even like hang them up on the pegboard and shelves on the pegboard and because I have right now that’s like it’s literally bolted into the concrete. So the concrete foundation, which I don’t know how smart that was, but it’s that’s how it is. So I can I can put a ton of stuff on that pegboard and maybe the pegboard is what houses my KDM stuff and then uh KDM actually needs a ton of space because the the boards you put the showdown board is 2 by 3 and then you have the hunt board which is like another 3 ft. Uh so like I can do the hunt board this way and the showdown board this way and it’ll fit on here just barely uh with a little bit of overlap.

So or actually no, there shouldn’t I don’t think there’ll be any overlap, but I can just barely fit it everything on this 6-ft table. So I need space for the chair. So we got to if I put the table here that gives me I can I can scoot up and down this whole area. And that overhangs not a huge deal like we already talked about. So I can slide my chair comfortably.

Uh this back wall might get a little little sketchy, you know, but I I use that sitting here. Okay, so a part of me is like what if I pop these doors off and then just get a shower curtain and like curtain rod it, which I think would I could get a it’s almost like be like a cool way of like entering the the RPG den. All right, I took some exact measurements instead of just eyeballing it. So if I if I push this there so I give myself that three I want to give myself a 3-ft buffer around the table just cuz it’ll be easier to walk with the actual uh measurements of these, these are only like like 8 in out, I think. So it this will be like a two and a half or maybe like a 2.

75-ft walkway through there, which is no big deal. And then in all the areas that I need the clearance, which is over here and opening for the doors to swing out. Uh I if I keep the gaming table there in the center of the room, uh everything else can fit and then I have all my bookshelves and my display stuff right here. Okay, I felt like this wasn’t being very productive. Uh so I just went and I did some other stuff and then I came back to it and uh at first I was feeling like like what am I even doing?

Am I just wasting my time doing this? But then I realized by like setting all this up and then keeping that how it is, what I can do is I can put these cubes over here, but if I put I can put the cubes here and then I want to build out like zine storage racks, like all the like A5 books and all the zines so I can display them like on both sides and also all my maps so I have like framed maps and I don’t want them permanently mounted to the wall and it’s really hard for me to put like screws and stuff cuz all the walls here are concrete or most of the walls are concrete. So I can build zine storage racks and map storage racks over here and I think that’d be a cool use of this wall and then I can I can do like some custom lighting in the racks I build. So that’ll be a video for the future, but uh I think this is the final layout and now it’s time to sell a bunch of stuff to cut down and and get a bunch of stuff out of here so I can actually rearrange it. Okay, that was the easy part.

Uh I think I got to start in here and do the hard part now and getting everything all the stuff over here. I’m going to do long-term storage. Uh I got a little bit of shelf stuff down there, Tupperware containers. Uh spilled coffee on this box a couple minutes ago. Got to clean that up.

Uh a bunch of Gunpla that I’m probably not going to do anytime soon. Uh there’s my chaos dwarfs, my Fabazel doors up there. Uh I want to get better at like old school style painting. Um I’m going to practice on a couple things before I do that. Uh confrontation, legit confrontation models.

Uh I’ll do that Sunday cuz that’s the game too I want to practice in that style. Uh this is what’s left of the Gunpla. I’m going to keep these. These are all stuff I really want to build. Uh, but I’ve already I’ve done a gunpla purge.

This is what remains. And tucked over here, um, this is just a box. It’s empty. Not that. Uh, but the rest of this this is going to be my works in progress shelf.

So, I’m going to limit myself to not having any outstanding projects. I’m going to limit it to just this shelf. Uh, oh god, there’s a GDM going. But my plan is in here. This will be like all the stuff like when I if I want to pull something out to work on it, I can just I can pop in here, grab it.

I’m going to put like a little curtain shower curtain right there. So, it’s like pull the door out so I have all this the the works in progress shelf. And that’s just where I’m going to keep like all the stuff I plan on working for the next year next year, honestly. And if it doesn’t fit on here, if it doesn’t fit on here or it doesn’t fit in long-term storage behind me, it’s got to go. So, I think I’m going to try to get $200 worth of stuff into eBay every day.

Uh, I’m starting with this. So, now that I can 3D print it, uh, I have this old Grymkin stuff that I I I’ve already 3D printed. So, this is the real metal. And I think the Skin and Moans is resin. So, I’ll throw this up on eBay.

Probably pretty cheap cuz it’s kind of rough. But, uh, I’m going to get $200 worth of Grymkin stuff on eBay. Wow, there’s a lot of people selling the Steamforged STLs on eBay. No, I already know how you birds. I’m not going to do that.

Uh, I just want to be clear. I’m definitely I’m unsarcastically definitely not going to do that. I think that’s pretty messed up. Okay, I got $200 on eBay. Starting to get it organized down here.

Got to get my Warmachine in. Uh, pretty good day. I don’t know if it was a good video, but it was a good hobby day. See you tomorrow.
