Another easy way to paint faces

Painting 10 min

Yesterday's face was underpaint and glaze. Today's face is Sunny Skin Tone, one Army Painter Dark Tone wash, and a couple of dots for eyes — about ten minutes start to finish.

The steps

  1. Base coat the face straight in Sunny Skin Tone. No underpainting, no glazing.

  2. Shake the Dark Tone properly. Use the black one, not the brown.

  3. Pull paint from the palette onto your thumb first, then take it from your thumb to the model. That keeps the amount controlled and stops the wash flooding into the eyes or pooling on the nose.

  4. Blot any excess back off on your thumb rather than the model.

  5. Two dots for eyes and it is done.

Yesterday vs today

Last night we did the tryhard speed mode — underpaint, then glaze. Today the approach is even simpler: I just base-coated Sunny Skin Tone (the color we glazed with in the last video) straight on the face. Now I’m going to wash it down and call it done.

The wash

Army Painter Dark Tone — black, not the brown — well-shaken. On this box art the face is actually pretty dark, like they just paneled it in. So black works.

A little too much paint on the brush is fine. The trick is the thumb: I pull paint from the palette onto my thumb first, then take it from my thumb onto the model. That way the amount is always controlled. If there’s too much, I just blot it back off on my thumb. It keeps the wash from flooding into the eyes or pooling on the bridge of the nose. I’m being careful around both.

The wash does the major work for me. Already, just from this, the face has way more definition. Even on the box art there’s not a lot going on with the face — most of the work is around the eyes and the ears.

The hair palette

If you’re curious, the hair is Foul Green plus Thunderbird Blue, airbrushed over a blue-green base. I should probably make a proper tutorial on this guy. I couldn’t find anything online about how to paint him. I’m probably about to be the only person on the internet who’s painted this model.

Speaking of: I don’t even know his name. I’m not well-versed in Infinity outside the faction I play, and by “play” I mean would like to play. I think I played three games of the newest edition of Infinity. I’ve followed Infinity since N2 and I’ve always wanted to play Combined. I finally found a local scene I could play regularly, and then my life kind of fell apart shortly after. I’m still putting it back together. But I love this game. I think Infinity is the coolest game out right now. Deep, hard, full of rules to remember.

Teeth

These teeth look metallic to me on the box art. I’ve still got the black wash on the palette, so I jam on that for the recesses between the teeth, then come in with gray on the teeth themselves and leave the black around the outline. Boom. Easy-mode teeth.

Solid black eyes with two white dots

The eyes on this guy are actually solid black with two tiny white dots — not a regular eye with a black iris like I did yesterday. Different look.

I grab Tenebris for the black (the blue-black I’ve completely fallen in love with) and push it into the socket. Wipe the brush. Pure white, just a tiny amount. Two dots.

Fixing a botched eye

The other eye went bad. Too much water on the brush, I think — paint wouldn’t dry in the socket. I dab black back over to reset, redraw the pupils. It’s not as clean as the first one, but it’s fine. Eyes are always hard. You can paint a million eyes and every single one is still going to suck a little.

A tiny glint of white at the end is what was missing. There it goes.

Wrap

There he is, next to the box art. Still need to lighten the hair around the face, but he’s basically done. Ten minutes total. Three colors plus a wash — a wash, the black, and the white. Plus the eyebrows, because why not.

Thanks for watching. I’ll see you tomorrow.

Full transcript of the video

Okay, so last night last night we did the try hard speed mode where we under painted and then glazed. Um on this one, I just base coated sun skin tone, which is what we glazed in the other one. And now I have Uh what do I have? I have dark tone from Army Painter. Okay, dark tone right here.

Properly shaken up. Um I’m using black because on this box art uh it’s actually pretty dark and I think they just like panel lined it. So I’m going to hit the ear. And that’s a whole lot of paint on my brush. That’s okay.

I can just soak it back up. Come in and hit the eyes. And even under that lip right here there was black. And we’re going to have to paint the the eyebrows back in. So I’m not even really too worried about that either.

But we’re going to let this wash like do major work for us. And I’m even I’m making sure I’m getting the eyes and the bridge of the nose. So we don’t want it to pool anywhere. So I’m putting very little like most of the the I’m going like from palette to my thumb and I’m even like I’m taking this off my thumb to put it on the model now. And I’m just being very careful and now what I’ll do is I’ll just wiggle it off of my thumb and then suck it back up.

So that already gives us a so much definition to our face. And really even on the box art, there’s not a lot going on on that face. Like most of it’s on the eyes. There’s very little highlights to that face. Uh and the ears.

So we’ll let them sit. We’ll let them dry for a second. That’s way too much. Suck this back up. Put a little bit more here.

Cool. Okay. There we go. Time to paint the eye. If you’re curious, I’m using foul green for the hair.

It’s The hair is all like foul green and then thunderbird blue. And what else did I do? When I was airbrushing, the base of it was this blue green. If you’re curious. If you want to follow along, I guess I probably should have made a tutorial on how to paint this dude because I could not find anything at all about how to painting him.

And uh a lot of the airbrush work, if you’re curious, I don’t I don’t even know his name. But I uh I made a tutorial for the airbrush work. And then really it was this really janky non-metallic. Cuz so I guess technically I did make I have recorded the footage. So maybe I should go back and turn that into a tutorial, I guess.

About to be the only body only person on the internet that’s painting this guy. Uh this is a very fun model to paint, though. No idea who it is. I’m not well versed in Infinity other than the faction that I play. And by faction that I play, I mean faction I would like to play.

Because I played I played I’ve I’ve played three total games of Infinity of the newest version of Infinity. I’ve been following Infinity since N2. And I’ve always just wanted to play Combined. But uh I finally found like the Infinity scene here so I could play regularly and then my life kind of uh honestly just kind of fell apart shortly after trying to start Infinity and I’m still in the process of putting it back together again. But I absolutely loved Infinity.

I think Infinity’s probably like for me the coolest game out right now. I just love everything about it. Um I love how like deep it’s like and it’s hard. Like there’s just so many There’s so many rules, so many things to remember. Uh there’s the eyebrows in um and now I I got to figure out these teeth.

They look silver to me. Or look like they’re metal to me. Um We have the black from our wash still in there. So let’s I’ve got these. Let’s just just see what happens if we jam on it a little bit here.

Uh well this will be a little bit thicker. This is about By this point like I said, this white powder is like totally dry now. So these have been sitting there for a while but this is going to be hard to do with the camera it literally touching my forehead right now. And this brush is getting a very bad curl. So I’m just do just using this gray and I’m leaving the black from the wash on the outskirts and in between the teeth.

They need a little bit more. Boom. Here’s my old face. Uh all right, so this guy it looks like actually these eyes are just solid black eyes. And you can see maybe can you see?

Can you? Can you focus? The eyes are just solid black and there’s instead of dotting a black iris, there’s two white dots, which is kind of what I talked about yesterday. So, let’s see. Grab some of this black right here.

This black. This is that Tenabrush I’ve fallen in love fallen in love with. It’s a blue black. Uh let’s see if we can get up in here in a way that you can see it and I can see it. And in all honesty, I should probably have my magnifier on.

There we go. Okay. So, now just pure white. Making sure I don’t have a on here. And now to paint this eye, it says two dots.

Boom, just like that. This other eye is not What’s going on here? So, this other eye went bad. I don’t know if you can see. So, I got a little bit of black on my brush and I’m going to just draw the pupil back in the middle here.

Not sure I think I got too much of water on the brush, maybe? And it’s like not drawing in the eye socket, but that’s okay. So, now this black and I’m just going to fix There it goes. It doesn’t look too wonky. And like eyes are just always hard.

You could paint a million eyes and every single time you paint an eye, it’s going to suck. There we go. Not too shabby. This That one I can’t get to focus. I got to fix the eyebrow.

I think maybe that’s why if I fix the eyebrow uh it’ll look better. There it goes. We managed uh maybe maybe one just little tiny little glint. There it goes. That’s what it was missing.

So, there’s ours. Wash my brush real quick. So, there’s ours. There’s the box art. I’m going to do I’m still going to do the I got to like lighten the hair around the face.

But, we’re getting there. And that took like 10 minutes. All three colors. A wash Uh actually only two if you don’t count the eyebrows. A A wash, a black, and a white.

Pretty cool. I just did the eyebrows, too, cuz uh why not? Thanks for watching. I’ll see you tomorrow.
