What is Relicblade

Relicblade is an indie tactics-RPG miniatures game designed and produced by Sean Sutter at Metal King Studio. Players build a party of 4 to 6 heroic characters and play out short, focused tactical games on a 2’×2’ board. Sessions run around 30 minutes, so it’s easy to fit multiple games into an evening.

Parties are built by alignment rather than by faction. Pick good or evil, then recruit any combination of characters and upgrades from that side. A dynamic action dice system gives each character meaningful turn-to-turn decisions, and the rules stay light enough that you can focus on tactics instead of looking things up.

The game is not miniature-agnostic. Relicblade ships its own line of detailed metal and plastic miniatures, along with lavishly illustrated character and upgrade cards that are part of the play experience.

How to start

  1. Read the free rules at the Learn to Play page.
  2. Pick a party of 4 to 6 characters from the Metal King Studio catalog and grab the matching minis and cards.
  3. Set up a 2’×2’ play area with terrain.

Catacombs of Kural

Catacombs of Kural is the official solo and cooperative expansion for Relicblade. It’s a $10 PDF download that turns the game into a dungeon-crawl campaign instead of a head-to-head skirmish. You play survivors trapped underground after being swallowed by magical chasms, with former rivals forced to ally to escape through ancient dungeons.

The expansion was designed alongside Malev as a player-versus-environment campaign that preserves Relicblade’s tactical core. The download includes the campaign booklet, an 18-card campaign deck, and a printable token set for every monster you’ll face. Events play out simultaneously with the Storms of Kural 2-player campaign, so the two stories run in parallel.

The Hobbinomicon take

Relicblade is everything the hobby should be. One person had a dream and brought it into reality: Sean Sutter does all the art, the game design, and the sculpting himself. That kind of solo authorship is rare, and seeing it actually pull off this well is genuinely inspiring.

The game itself is the icing on top. It’s fantastic.
