What is Age of Fantasy: Quest
Age of Fantasy: Quest is a solo and co-op adventure game from OnePageRules, created by Gaetano Ferrara. You run a party of two to four heroes, and the game itself runs the monsters. OPR calls it a hybrid of a skirmish game and an RPG: you fight off waves of enemies on the table, and between missions your heroes level up, buy gear, and carry their injuries into the next fight.
It came out as a free public beta in June 2024. The current core rules are v2.0.1, and they’re still free. The only things you pay for are the narrative campaign books and the minis, if you want OPR’s own.
It’s set in the same world as OPR’s other fantasy games, and OPR’s sci-fi line has its own Quest game, Grimdark Future: Star Quest.
How it plays
- Heroes go first, then the AI. Each round every hero activates, and then the enemy units activate one by one, closest to a hero first.
- An action plus a skill action. Each hero takes one action (Rest, Hold, Advance, Rush, or Charge) and one skill action, like searching for loot, pushing an enemy, or using a hero skill.
- Power is your fuel. Heroes spend 2 power for an extra action, to turn a failed test into a pass, to shrug off being Shaken, or to revive a friend. Resting refills it, but a resting hero does nothing else that turn. Spend more power than you have and you take wounds instead.
- Enemies run off a flowchart. If they can see a hero they close in to shoot or charge, and if they can’t, they head for the nearest AI Goal. No second player needed.
- Nobody dies mid-mission. A hero who drops goes unconscious until another hero revives them. If the whole party is down at once, the mission fails.
- Waves and alertness. An alertness track goes up every round, and when it hits 6 a new wave of reinforcements arrives. Wave size scales with your party’s point value and the difficulty you picked, from Beginner to Legendary.
- The campaign. Missions earn XP and gold. Heroes level up to improve their stats, shop between chapters, and pick up injuries if they end a mission knocked out.
It uses the same d6 core as the rest of OPR: roll a stat test, 6s always succeed, 1s always fail.
How it differs from Age of Fantasy: Skirmish
Age of Fantasy: Skirmish is OPR’s head-to-head game. Two players build equal-points armies (OPR suggests 150 points to start and 250 for a full game), alternate activating one unit each, and fight over objectives for four rounds. Quest drops the opponent. Your whole party activates before the enemy does, heroes get the extra skill action and the power system, and the point of a game is surviving the mission and growing your heroes, not out-scoring someone across the table. Both use a 4 × 4 ft table with 20+ pieces of terrain, and both are built in OPR’s Army Forge app.
How to start
- Download the free rules. The core rules, a Beginner’s Guide, and a Campaign Builder are all free on the Age of Fantasy: Quest page.
- Make your heroes. Use the free Army Forge web app.
- Pick your missions. The Campaign Builder rolls up a random campaign or one-off missions. Or buy a narrative campaign: A Study in Treachery, The Rusted Crown, Heart of the Rot, and Out of the Shadows are $4.99 each on DriveThruRPG.
- Get minis. Any fantasy minis you already own will do. If you want OPR’s own, they sell 3D-print files through Patreon and MyMiniFactory, pre-printed resin on Etsy, and some plastic kits. There are also free paper minis on DriveThruRPG.
- Want a quick game? The free Horde Mode rules throw ten escalating waves at your party and score how long you last.
