What is Rapture
Rapture is a 32mm skirmish wargame from Gravity Bay, a studio in Erlangen, Germany. Gravity Bay has been developing it since 2014. It funded on Kickstarter in December 2020, the first packages went out to backers in October 2021, and the official launch was on 12 March 2022. The rules are in German and English.
The setting is 2049. A mysterious sphere has appeared around Earth, most of the world’s population has disappeared, and new factions are fighting over what’s left. The New World Order steps out of the shadows to claim large parts of the western world as the new world government. The Angels, unknown aliens, fight the remaining humans relentlessly, though nobody is sure what they want. The people of Atlantis come up from the depths of the ocean because their old enemy is back. Mercenaries work out of Konstantinopol, a neutral city founded by an oligarch called Konstantin.
Gravity Bay’s faction list also includes ICNUN and Prowler, with more factions promised.
How it plays
- Build a battlegroup. A standard game is 100 points, usually 3 to 5 units. Units come in three kinds: Heroes are single named characters, Bands are a leader with one or more apprentices, and Squads are usually three models.
- Alternate activations. Players take turns activating units. Who goes first each round depends on the total Initiative of the units still on the table.
- React to everything. For each action your opponent takes, you can make a matching reaction. Your actions and reactions are counted separately.
- Morale does two jobs. Units track Health, Morale, Action and Reaction points. Morale is a damage track and also something you spend on special actions.
- Play the mission. Every player has their own mission worth victory points. Killing enemy units scores too, but Gravity Bay says the missions pay better.
- Short games. Six rounds on a 90 × 90 cm table, 60 to 120 minutes depending on how well you know the rules, for 2 to 4 players.
How to start
- Read the free rules. The full rulebook and a quick-start version are free PDFs in English on the downloads page, with no sign-up. The same page has the errata, an FAQ, printable rulers (including US Letter and US Legal), and print-and-play terrain buildings. The shop also sells the Rule- and Storybook, a 196-page A4 hardcover with the complete rules, rules for the Climate, Loot and Creatures add-ons, alternative game modes for 2 or more players, and a long story chapter.
- Pick a starter box. Each faction has one on the official shop. Gravity Bay says a starter box holds “everything you need to play”: a full 100-point battlegroup, unit profile cards, missions, quick-start rules and paper tokens. The miniatures are resin and need assembling. The shop is in the EU and has a page for ordering from outside it.
- Watch the tutorials. Gravity Bay’s rulebook page walks through profile cards, combat, actions and reactions, cover and terrain, and setup.
