What is Gaslands

Gaslands is a tabletop wargame of car-on-car destruction in a post-apocalyptic wasteland, designed by Mike Hutchinson and published by Osprey Games. You control a small fleet of armed vehicles and fight for resources, dominance and survival.

There’s no official miniatures range. The game is designed to be played with kitbashed Matchbox and Hot Wheels cars, and the official site invites you to kitbash and customise them into “gas-guzzling death racers”. Painting them is optional.

Osprey first published Gaslands in 2017. It won both the Judges’ and People’s Choice awards for Best New Miniatures Rules at UK Games Expo 2018. Gaslands: Refuelled followed in September 2019 as a revised and expanded 192-page hardback. Osprey says it collects everything from the free Time Extended supplements, updates the rules from community feedback, and adds new material: more perks, sponsors, vehicle types and weapons. The first edition’s art is joined by new pieces from David Auden Nash. Hutchinson called it the game’s “director’s cut”.

The rules cover everything from motorbikes to big rigs, with special weapons and accessories like oil slicks, caltrops and nitro boosters, and options for scenarios, environmental conditions, crew and campaigns.

How it plays

Hutchinson’s own 60-second version, from the official site:

  • Gears decide who moves. Each turn counts up from Gear 1 to Gear 6. In each gear phase, every vehicle in that gear or higher activates, so faster cars move more often.
  • Templates, not tape measures. To move, you pick a maneuver template your current gear allows and put it in front of your car. Touch a template and you have to use it.
  • Skid dice. Before moving you can roll skid dice to shift gear, spin or slide. Shift results are good and hazard results are bad.
  • Hazard tokens. Shifting, sliding and the rest build up hazard tokens. Pick up six and you wipe out at the end of that activation. Shift results on the skid dice can clear hazards.
  • Collisions. Drive into anything and the collision resolves at once. It’s usually bad news for the lighter vehicle, and worse for everyone if it’s head-on.
  • Shooting. After a car moves, it gets one attack per crew member. Cars under fire can try to evade. Take too much damage and you’re wrecked, and you might explode.
  • Death races. In a death race you have to drive through the gates in order, in the right direction, faster than everyone else.

Teams are built from vehicles, weapons, upgrades, sponsors and perks. An Osprey team-building example shows a truck under the Mishkin sponsor, fitted with an arc lightning projector and an experimental nuclear engine.

How to start

  1. Get the rulebook. Gaslands: Refuelled is $30 in hardback, or $21 as a PDF or ePub, from Osprey.
  2. Print the free downloads. The official downloads page has the Refuelled quick reference card, vehicle dashboards, movement templates in A4 and US Letter, labels to make your own skid dice, and the Refuelled FAQ. There are also free extras: achievements, beta organised play rules, and a beta Kids Mode.
  3. Raid the toy box. Grab some Matchbox or Hot Wheels cars and add weapons and armour from your bits box. The official list of what you need is the rulebook, some toy cars, maneuver templates, some six-sided dice, and somewhere to play, “like a kitchen table”.
  4. Buy accessories if you want them. Templates, tokens, skid dice, bits and terrain are sold by a long list of small makers on the Friends of Gaslands page, in the UK, US and beyond.
  5. Build your team online. The downloads page links to several fan-made team builders, for the web, Android and iOS.

There are two official expansions, sold as PDFs on DriveThruRPG: Gaslands: Legacy, a narrative campaign where every named toy car has its own stats, and Martian Racing Federation, an anti-grav racing mode. Legacy is also in print as a softcover.

Community & reviews

Gaslands: Third Edition has been in closed beta since June 2026 for Hutchinson’s Patreon supporters, and he says to expect a hardback rulebook from Osprey and a starter box from Planet Smasher Games in summer 2027. He’s taking photos of community builds for both until 30 November 2026. Refuelled is the current edition until then.
