Quick Base Work

/ 6 min read

Finishing up a base with dirt effects, weathering powders, and liquid chrome scratches on metal panels.

The Quick Approach

Quick one today—day 113. Going to try to figure out something for this base. I don’t really know what I’m doing, but let’s experiment.

Adding Dirt Between Panels

I’m using a dry brush to hit the dirt areas between the metal panels. It’s okay to get some on the edge of the panels—even getting some on the pipe is fine.

Then I hit the peaks with our Mythril Silver—the same silver we’ve been using on the model. The areas we hit with white are going to pick up the metal flake and pop more.

The Oil Effect

I really like Brownish Decay because it creates almost like there’s oil being spilled. Over top of the white, it makes this look more like dirt with an industrial feel.

Hit the grass real quick with the same—perfect. After cutting the base in, I’ll probably do a second coat of black on the rim since I’m using a really liquidy black.

Something’s Missing

The base is still kind of missing something. I think I might need to rust out those panels because the orange would really complement our paint job. Started glazing that top area back in too—got a little water spillage to fix.

Weathering Powder Magic

Pulled out the Tamiya weathering powders. First, I want to get some of the middle one to hit the base. The orange goes in the middle of the panels because the edges would be sharp and worn still.

After rubbing it in and getting some up to the feet, I’ll matte seal this to lock it in. Already I like this more—that’s what I needed.

The Liquid Chrome Details

Got some Vallejo Liquid Chrome—whoa, too much (as I’ve been doing). Getting really fancy with it now, just hitting the scratches and bolts. Those will pop more.

I don’t want to get too carried away as I start edge highlighting, but there we go—that’s a lot better.

The Result

The orange really looks good with the teal. Still probably need to tweak it, but that’s much better than it was. The base just needed that rust to complement the color scheme.

Need to hit the base rim again and matte it down, but I’m happy with where we’re at. Now for real—see you tomorrow.

Transcript

All right. Uh, quick one. Day 113. Is this 113? Uh, going to try to figure out something for the base here.

Uh, I don’t really know what I’m going to do. Just like Oh, that’s way too much. And then I just take our a dry brush. And I just want a little bit of this. And I’m going to hit the dirt in between the metal panels and see what that gives us.

And it’s okay to get some on the edge of these panels. And we get some on the pipe, too. I didn’t think about that. That’s okay. And we just want to hit the peaks is some of our mythyl silver.

The silver we’ve been using on the model. And now those areas that we hit with the white are going to pick up our metal flake and like pop more hopefully. I think we need a little bit more paint on our brush. There we go. And now with this brownish decay over top of that white, it’s going to make this look more like dirt.

And I really like the brownish decay because it’s almost it’s going to create almost like there’s oil. It’s being spilled for spray. I just hit this grass real quick. See what this looks like. Oh yeah, that’s perfect.

Okay, so I’ve cut the base in and uh I’ve still I’ll probably do a second coat of the black on here cuz I’m using a really liquidy black, but I don’t know. I think the base is still kind of missing something and I think I might need to rust out those panels cuz I think the orange would look really good and kind of complement our paint job. And I started glazing that top in again. I got a little bit of water over there. Uh just to fix that still.

So I don’t know. I think maybe maybe I’ll rust it. I don’t know. I want to let everything dry cuz again I did this pretty fast and sloppy. So let everything dry and see where the base is at.

Uh, but I think we’re done for the day cuz I am very tired. But, uh, we made a lot of progress here. I slapped this wet ass paint on here. I’m out of the black I normally use for base rims. So, we’ll see what that looks like.

But, >> dry. >> Um, I don’t want to move it too much. But, I don’t know. It just doesn’t Maybe I just don’t like those bases after I already printed them and glued everybody to them. I don’t know.

I need to figure out something different, but I think that’s going to be a job for tomorrow. I don’t know. What do you guys think? Let me know in the comments below. Uh, see you tomorrow.

Just be dawning this guy. So, I’ve got Tamia weathering powders real quick. Um, first of all, I want to get some of this some of the middle one and hit these real quick. Okay. But really what I’m interested in, I can get some of this orange down here.

Let me just rub. So this would be more up in like the middle panels or the middle of the panel because the edges would be like sharp and worn still. So, let’s just see. And we’ll get some up to the feet. And I’ll I’ll matt seal this to lock this in.

But I think already I like this more. Yeah, there we go. I think that’s what I needed. I like it a little bit more. Um, and actually I’ve got Malta liquid chrome.

Whoa, too much like I’ve been doing. Let’s get really fancy with it and just hit these I’m sending these scratches and those bolts. And so now like those will pop more. Uh as we get them in the back too. I don’t want to get too too carried away as I start edge highlighting this.

Okay. So, I think I think that’s a lot better. Um, I need to hit the base room again and I’ll matt this down, but I like that a lot more. Getting the orange in there, this looks really good with the teal. Here’s kind of like the full effect.

Um, I don’t know. I think I still probably tweak it, but that’s much better than it was. Okay, now for real.
