What is Wyrdcry
Wyrdcry is “an unofficial fan-made hack of Warcry, dragged through the dirt and madness of Mordheim.” It’s the work of Johan Markström, a Mordheim community organizer in Stockholm, and it’s free.
The idea came out of a Warcry campaign. Markström’s group in Stockholm was running one, and the injuries and loot sent him back to his old Mordheim rulebook. So Wyrdcry takes Warcry’s fast core rules for the fighting and adds a campaign built on Mordheim’s. Your warband fights through the cursed city for wyrdstone, and the fighters who survive pick up experience, injuries and better gear.
It’s still in playtest. The current version is 0.5, which went live in May 2026. There are six warbands: Clan Eshin, Mercenaries, Witch Hunters, the Cult of the Possessed, the Sisters of Sigmar, and the Undead. The last four arrived in beta with 0.5.
It’s unofficial. Mordheim and Warcry belong to Games Workshop, and Wyrdcry isn’t connected to them.
How it plays
- Six dice for initiative. Each player rolls six dice. Whoever has the most singles gets the initiative. Matching dice become ability dice: a [Double], [Triple] or [Quad].
- A wyrd die. Each player also gets one wyrd die per round. It can add a single or bump a [Double] up to a [Triple], so it can swing who goes first.
- Two actions each. Players alternate activating fighters. Each one gets two actions: Move, Attack, Retreat, Wait, or Channel for magic.
- Six stats. Move, Fight, Shoot, Defense, Health and Bravery. Measuring counts vertical distance too, so climbing is part of the game.
- Short battles. At least four rounds on a 3’ × 3’ table. After the fourth, a roll decides if there’s a fifth.
- Search parties. Your warband deploys in three search parties, split as evenly as you can.
- A campaign. After each battle, the Aftermath Sequence decides who was injured or killed. Fighters earn renown and advancements, and wyrdstone handed to your faction earns favour. The rules suggest a 10-game campaign.
Markström’s description of the result: “having your leader push another fighter off a walkway, grab a wyrdstone, get hit in the face by a falling fish only to fall four stories and die is very much still a thing.”
How to start
- Read the rules online. Everything is on wyrdcry.net. The downloads page has the 0.5 rulebook as a PDF, plus a warband roster and a game reference sheet.
- Build a warband. Up to 1000 gold coins, at least 3 fighters, and exactly one Leader. The warband builder is in beta.
- Pick your minis. The warbands are the ones from the original Mordheim rulebook, so a Mordheim warband fits.
- Build a city. You need terrain for a 3’ × 3’ table, and a ruined city fits best.
- Get the older books if you want them. The 0.4 playtest rulebook and campaign book are free on itch.io. They’re out of date, but the downloads page says they show what the finished book will look like.
The plan is to release the full game as a zine that people can print for free.
