What is Turnip28

Turnip28 is a regiment wargame by the British artist Max FitzGerald. Picture a Napoleonic army after the end of the world: mud, powder smoke, bicorne hats, and soldiers who worship root vegetables. Each side is about 30 models in small regiments, led by Snobs. It’s an army game, just not full rank-and-flank size.

The rules are free, and always will be. They’re on Google Drive through the official site. Version 19 came out on 22 September 2026, and it’s the last version before a printed hardback rulebook.

It grew out of the Inq28 scene, and it became one of the biggest indie games in the hobby. The Turnip28 Discord has around 8,000 members, the Patreon has more than 10,000, and the fans run their own event, TurnipCon. It also kicked off a family of “28” games, including Necropolis28.

How it plays

  • Snobs give orders. Each side has a Toff and Toadies who order the regiments within command range, and players alternate orders.
  • Blunders. Before each order you roll, and a 1 means a weaker version of the order and a panic token.
  • Shoot the closest. Units have to target the nearest enemy.
  • Shooting goes both ways. When you shoot, the target shoots back at the same time, unless powder smoke stops it.
  • Panic. Panic builds up to 6. A charged unit rolls a d6 plus its panic, and on a 7 or more it runs.
  • Cults. The core book has 16 Cults that add units and rules. The book suggests playing a few games without them first.

There are no points. Games are balanced by how many Snobs each side has, usually three. It’s about 20 d6s, a 3’ table, and around an hour.

How to start

  1. Download the rules. Core Rules v19 is free on Google Drive, with web, print, and black-and-white versions and 3 scenarios.
  2. Build your regiments. Any 28mm figures work, and the rules actively encourage kitbashing. The official figures are STLs on MyMiniFactory, and licensed shops print them: haychdee in the UK and finura.dk for the EU, US, and Australia.
  3. Try the expansions. The Shattered Lance adds 6 Cults, 6 scenarios, over 50 relics, and a massive dragon. Sallow and the Mercenary Cults is a taster campaign. Both are free.

There’s also an official skirmish game in playtest called Swill, set in the city of Swill.
