What is Star Wars: Shatterpoint
Star Wars: Shatterpoint is “a skirmish miniatures game for two players” from Atomic Mass Games. You take control of “iconic characters from the Star Wars galaxy and their allies” and race your opponent to complete missions on a table packed with terrain. Will Shick is the lead game designer, and Michael Plummer is the lead game developer.
It launched on June 2, 2023. By February 2026 it had grown past 130 characters from across the Star Wars eras.
The fights are small on purpose. The rulebook frames each game as one of those moments where “the actions of a few can change the fate of the entire galaxy,” fought “between small teams of the galaxy’s greatest heroes and villains” rather than big armies.
In February 2026 AMG said it was taking “our foot from the gas” on new Shatterpoint releases. It also said “Shatterpoint is not going anywhere,” with regular rules updates, an annual character balance pass, and organized play from leagues up to a World Championship.
How it plays
- Build a strike team. A strike team is two squads, and each squad is exactly three units: a Primary, a Secondary, and a Supporting unit. Your Primary picks the Era and gives you Squad Points to spend on the other two, and every unit in the squad has to come from that Era. Some units are a single character, others are a handful of troopers.
- Win the tug of war. A mission is played in Struggles, and the first player to win two Struggles wins the game. Each turn you drag the Struggle token toward your side, one space for every active objective you control. When it reaches your Momentum tokens, you take the Struggle. Wounding an enemy unit adds Momentum on your side, so fighting and scoring feed each other. The objectives change with each new Struggle.
- Draw to activate. You shuffle an Order Card for each unit together with one Shatterpoint Card. Each turn you flip a card and activate that unit, so you don’t always get the unit you want. The Shatterpoint Card lets you pick any unit, and once a turn you can spend 1 Force to put a card in reserve for later.
- Two actions each. An activated unit gets up to two actions: move, focus, attack, use an ability, recover, or take cover.
- The Force as a shared pool. Every unit adds its Force stat to one pool for your whole team. You spend Force on abilities, and a wounded or injured unit pays extra for them. The pool refreshes when your Order Deck runs out.
- Combat trees. Attacks use eight-sided attack dice and six-sided defense dice. Each success left over lets you pick a step along the unit’s Combat Tree on its Stance Card, which can mean damage, shoving a target, or other effects. Some characters have a double-sided Stance Card and can flip between fighting styles.
- Go vertical. The rules call for most of the table to be filled with terrain “of varying elevations,” and characters climb, jump, and dash across it.
How to start
- Get the Core Set. The Core Set is $164.99 on Asmodee’s US store. It has 16 plastic miniatures (Anakin Skywalker, Ahsoka Tano, Captain Rex and 501st Clone Troopers, and Bo-Katan with Clan Kryze Mandalorians on one side; Lord Maul, Asajj Ventress, Gar Saxon and Mandalorian Super Commandos, and Kalani with B1 Battle Droids on the other), 23 plastic terrain pieces, dice, movement and range tools, cards, and the rulebook. The models come unassembled and unpainted.
- Read the free rules. The full core rules are a free download, along with the FAQ, errata, event rules, and updated unit cards.
- Add squad packs. Most squad packs are $49.99 to $59.99 on the same store.
- Try the other modes. Both are free print-and-play downloads. Key Operations are asymmetric missions with a narrative focus, plus a campaign. Legendary Encounters is a three-player mode where two players team up against one who controls a Galactic Legend.
