What is Repent! Ye Foolish Gods

Repent! Ye Foolish Gods is a “gritty dark fantasy mini-agnostic solo / co-op skirmish miniatures wargame” from Snarling Badger Studios, the studio run by Adam Loper of Tabletop Minions and Vince Venturella.

You build a sept of fallen and cursed warriors and go on what the studio calls “a roaring rampage of revenge against the Dark Gods.” You pick the god you’re after, then cut through its cultists, servants, and worshippers, picking up treasure along the way, until you’re strong enough to face the god itself.

It’s miniatures-agnostic. Build your warriors “from any models you like,” and use whatever you’ve got for the enemies.

How it plays

  • Four warriors. Your sept is four warriors, each with equipment, spells, talents, and magic items. The sept itself also has a type, a destiny, and a curse hanging over it.
  • Six septs. The sept types set how you go about your revenge. The Sept of Decapitation leans into slaughter, the Sept of Esoterica into magic. There are 33 spells and 26 talents to build from.
  • Roll under a D12. Warriors and monsters roll a twelve-sided die and try to get equal to or under the relevant stat. Every model has Offense, Defense, Life, Tactics, and Fate.
  • The enemy runs itself. Each foe follows an AI script. The free scenario sheets use Dross, Defender, and Hunter AI, and split the enemy into Minions, Servants, and Lieutenants.
  • Raids, then the god. The campaign has 15 scenarios. You choose which raid to take on, from destroying shrines to disrupting rituals and stealing magical secrets. The gods answer by sending champions, monsters, and their Vanquishers after you, and then you face the god.
  • Degrees of winning. A scenario can end in a Minor Victory, a Victory, or a Glorious Victory, depending on how many warriors you lose and whether you finish the secondary objectives in time.

How to start

  1. Grab the free sheets. The Sept sheet and the Scenario sheets are free on the Repent page. The scenario sheets give you a feel for the enemy stat lines before you buy anything.
  2. Get the rulebook. It’s 132 pages. The PDF is $14, or $22 plus shipping for the PDF and a printed book, both through WargameVault.
  3. Dig out some minis. Four fantasy figures for your sept and a handful of enemies. Anything goes. Twelve-sided dice and a tape measure cover the rest.
  4. Add the deck later, if you want. The Add-On Deck is 46 tarot-sized cards: 33 spells, six enemy AI cards, and seven God cards. It’s $19 plus shipping printed with a free PDF, or $11 for the PDF alone. The studio says it’s optional and not required to play.
