What is Hag28
Hag28 is “a miniature agnostic skirmish wargame for 2 players on a 3’x3’ board using a handful of six-sided dice.” You’re a hag, and so is the other player. You both want the same secluded hamlet, and you fight it out with minions and magic until one of you is dead or the hamlet is a charred crater.
The rulebook calls its tone “dark & goofy.” It’s written and designed by T. M. Cibelius, who goes by Reformed Hillbilly, with illustrations by Jimmy Spence. The art is hand-painted watercolour, and the itch.io page says no generative AI was used.
It was funded on Kickstarter in August 2025, with 49 backers pledging $1,430 against a $700 goal. The finished book and mini files went out to backers through BackerKit on 1 December 2025. Version 2, a full rules and layout overhaul with more art, more minions and a new scenario, followed in April 2026.
How it plays
- Build your Hunt. Your warband is called a Hunt. The rulebook’s quick guide runs: choose your Hagishness and Hexes, choose your Goodies, pick the Minions that join you, then choose a scenario and fight the other hag for the hamlet.
- Five kinds of hag. The core book has five types of Hag to lead your Hunt, from the classic Wode Hag to the gluttonous Brine Hag, each with its own hexes and traits.
- Pretties buy everything. Pretties are the game’s currency. You spend them on Goodies (weapons and magic items) and Minions. The Kickstarter promised 10 distinct Minions, including a swarm of sapient bees with tiny shotguns.
- Action Points. Players take turns activating units and spending Action Points to grab objectives or hunt down the enemy hag.
- Impact, Resolve and Spite. Impact and Resolve mean creatures get thrown across the table, and Spite keeps them fighting.
- Scenarios with complications. Scenarios come with complications that mess with your plans. One, The Bridge Troll, puts a troll under the bridge that everyone on the main road has to cross.
- Campaigns. Longer campaigns grow your power and minions until your enemy is wiped out or the hamlet is gone. Then you move on and find a new hamlet.
How to start
- Get the rules. The Hag28 PDF is $15 on itch.io. It’s the v2 rulebook.
- Use the minis you have. It’s miniature agnostic, so any witch, goblins and village monsters on your shelf will do.
- Or print a hag. The designer sells a War Witch STL for $3, a 28mm witch with a big hat and a big axe. Hag28 is the first game its listing names. Kickstarter backers also got a Cauldron Goblin minion STL sculpted by Pablo Silvestris (Thestilltower).
- Clear a small table. You need 3x3 ft and a handful of d6s. A game takes about an hour.
