What is Eldfall Chronicles

Eldfall Chronicles is “a tactical tabletop game focused on small warband battles,” set in the high-fantasy world of Calad. Each player leads a party of adventurers, usually 3 to 6 models, through quest-driven scenarios. It’s made by Freecompany, a small studio in Ljubljana, Slovenia. The rules are written by Žiga Gantar and Tjaša Gaber.

Freecompany sells its own miniatures for it, made from what it calls Unicool Hard Plastic. The factions include the Empire of Soga, the Helian League, the Coalition of Thenion, the Sand Kingdoms, the Oni Clans, and the Goblin Wartribes, plus Neutral models any party can hire.

The same miniatures also work in the studio’s Dungeon Crawl mode, a separate cooperative game. The skirmish game is the one covered here.

How it plays

  • Build a party. Agree on a quest and a points limit, pick a faction, then recruit models and buy Upgrades. The rulebook suggests 60 points for new players, which usually gets you 3 models with some points left over, and encourages games of 60 to 90 points or more. A party can have up to 10 models.
  • Everything is a d20. You roll under a model’s stat to succeed. An attack rolls a number of d20s equal to its Strike value, and each hit then needs a Damage roll under the weapon’s Power minus the target’s Armor.
  • Activation Points. Every model gets Activation Points equal to its Stamina at the start of each turn. You spend them to activate your models in any order, and you don’t have to spend them all on one model before moving to the next.
  • The other player reacts. While you move and act, your opponent can spend their own models’ Activation Points to react: attack, dodge, or strike at a model as it runs past. When two models attack each other, both roll at once in a Confrontation, and the higher successful roll wins. Then roles swap and the other player takes their turn.
  • Quests and schemes. Each game is played to a quest with its own goal and end conditions. Optional Scheme Cards add hidden objectives and are part of ranked competitive play.
  • Play against the game. Monsters and other models can run on Hostile Behavior cards, so you can play co-op or solo against the game itself. Solo and multiplayer each have their own supplementary rules.

Most games take 30 to 60 minutes, and tournament games are usually on a 3x3 ft table. There’s an organized play circuit too, with seasonal competitive quests and leaderboards. Season 2 runs from July 1, 2026, to July 1, 2027.

How to start

  1. Download the rules. The Resources page has the full Core Rules v1.6 as a free PDF, plus errata, a rules FAQ, the Spell Book, profile cards for every faction, and quick start rules for both two-player starters. A printed Rulebook v1.5 is $16.
  2. Get a Two-Player Starter Set. It’s $110. Empire of Soga vs. Helian League comes with four models for each faction, a Water Elemental monster with its Hostile Behavior card, 89 tokens, 4 area templates, 2 measuring tools, the v1.6 rulebook, profile cards, and 4 d20s. There’s also a Coalition of Thenion vs. Sand Kingdoms set at the same price. The minis come unassembled and unpainted.
  3. Or one faction. Faction Starters, like the Helian League Faction Starter, are $58 for four models and their profile cards. They aren’t the complete game, so you’ll need the free rules and some tokens.
  4. Use Guild Hall. The free Guild Hall companion app has the latest model profiles. Freecompany updated all profiles in July 2026.
