Kingdom Death Monster: Lantern Year 4 Settlement Phase

/ 3 min read

The Lantern Year 4 settlement phase after the antelope fight—lights in the sky, innovating paint and sculpture, rolling twins from intimacy, and preparing for the butcher.

Transcript

We just finished fighting the screaming antelope. Our story event for the settlement phase is Lights in the Sky—a spectacular light show erupts against the limitless darkness above. Swirling vivid trails streak overhead and lift everyone’s spirits.

Lights in the Sky

The lingering effect is that the settlement’s collective imagination is set aflame. After rolling for any endeavor, you may add plus one or plus two to the result. That’s going to affect what we do in the settlement phase. We don’t have any of the other innovations unlocked for it to do anything else, but that’s the best event we’ve gotten yet.

We’ve also triggered the nemesis encounter—Butcher level one. After the settlement phase, we skip the hunt phase and go straight into the Butcher fight. I really tried not to read ahead, so I didn’t realize that was coming next. Time to put the Butcher together.

Settlement Actions

The nightmare tick went on our archer. Rolled a nine—she gets permanent plus one evasion, bringing her to plus two total. My thinking is that’ll be good since she’s the one who doesn’t wear armor yet.

We also got love juice. With Lights in the Sky giving us plus one or plus two on endeavor rolls, we definitely need to do intimacy because we can control the output.

I really wanted to make Leather Worker, but I just don’t have the three hides for it. I’m short on hides. So I made a boss medic bandage and a brain mint, then didn’t have anything else I could craft.

Innovations

I innovated twice since I didn’t have materials to craft anything else. First pull was Paint versus Inner Lantern—tough decision, but I went with Paint. Second pull was Sculpture versus Lantern Oven. My survival limit is only two and I already have stuff that gives plus one when leaving for a hunt, so I was hitting the cap every time anyway. Went with Sculpture.

Used the Sculpture on Ifra to try for the Strategist fighting art. Even with the plus two bonus, she didn’t get it.

Intimacy and Twins

Since we took Protect the Young, we get to roll two dice for intimacy plus add one or two from Lights in the Sky. Both dice came up nines. If only we’d gotten a Hovel when we innovated, but we didn’t. We pushed to get twins—pretty cool.

Alexios and Erate are sitting out this fight. Alexios just got weapon proficiency, so I’m swapping him with Clenestra—she’s taking the guitars into the Butcher fight. Erate has never gone to battle yet.

Wrapping Up

We’re out of endeavor points. Intimacy was free from the love juice. Pretty successful settlement phase overall. Now it’s time to build the Butcher model.

Almost forgot—rolling for the twins’ gender. Twin A is red, twin B is black, odds are male, evens are female. They’re twin boys, both rolled ones.
