The conclusion of our first butcher fight—restarted after discovering rule mistakes, featuring Hack City, two survivor deaths, and a hard-won victory via death blow.
Transcript
If you saw part one, you may have noticed I made a mistake—I accidentally shuffled Dreaded Trophies and Berserker into the AI deck instead of keeping them as moods/traits. I also forgot about Infectious Lunacy. So I’m restarting the fight from scratch.
The Restart: Hack City
The butcher came out swinging. His first turn, he drew Hack City targeting Sophia the Strong. Speed four, accuracy four—three hits exploding into more dice. Sophia took massive damage: a light injury to the head, heavy injuries to the waist, intestinal prolapse (permanent—can’t equip waist gear ever again), and four bleeding tokens.
But she survived Hack City, triggering the Legendary Lungs story event. The flavor text is incredible—the sensation of drowning under the butcher’s attacks. She rolled to potentially gain a fighting art but came up just short, only getting plus three survival (which we were already maxed on).
The Archer Dies Again
History repeated itself. Our archer finally hit with the catgut bow—both dice landing—but failed to wound. The failure reaction triggered the head hunter, and the butcher chased her down. Two hits to the head. Heavy injury. Head explosion. Killed instantly.
She died in both versions of this fight. It was just her time.
The Grinding Middle
After losing two ranged attacks, the fight became a grinding melee. The butcher’s infectious lunacy and constant screaming kept dealing brain damage, triggering frenzy on multiple survivors. Sophia and Clenestra were both frenzied—plus strength and speed but unable to use survival.
The trap card was devastating. Every time we got close to finishing the butcher off, the trap would reshuffle and knock everyone down. Blood tokens accumulated dangerously on everyone.
Sophia Falls
With three AI wounds left, Sophia was sitting at three blood tokens. The butcher’s attacks now had bleed one from the dreaded trophies, and his double-activation basic attacks pushed her to five blood tokens. She bled out. The last of our original four survivors, gone.
Clenestra’s Vengeance
It came down to Clenestra alone. Frenzied, plus two strength and speed, rolling seven dice. She landed four hits and found the death blow location. Strength plus three, needing threes to wound. She rolled a six. The butcher fell.
Each surviving survivor got to choose permanent evasion or accuracy—we took accuracy on both. The death blow added plus two to the reward roll, getting us the Butcher’s Cleaver rare gear and a broken lantern resource.
Aftermath
Two survivors dead—our archer and Sophia the Strong. The butcher was the hardest fight by far, with way more mechanics than the white lions or antelope. I made a lot of mistakes and tried to correct them as I went.
The Butcher’s Cleaver is paired, meaning we’d need to fight him again for the second one. That’s about 10 hunts away. I’m keeping Clenestra on guitar proficiency rather than switching to axe—I don’t think it’s worth it with that many fights before we see him again.
Rest in peace, Sophia. We’ll put her model on the shelf in a place of honor and build a new survivor. Thanks for watching—this one was rough.
