Kingdom Death Monster - Lantern Year 5

/ 3 min read

Lantern Year 5 in our KDM campaign—fighting a second Screaming Antelope with upgraded survivors, dealing with permanent injuries, and pushing toward the mid-game.

Transcript

This is the aftermath of the butcher fight and the settlement phase. I picked up some organizer containers from Costco that are perfect for keeping all the little tokens organized for Kingdom Death.

New Party Setup

We’ve got our upgraded survivors ready for the second screaming antelope hunt. The guitar player now has the death mask and crits on threes—should be critting like crazy. He’s got brain mint so he can stand up if knocked down. Theren is our spear specialist now with plus four total strength from the frenzy drink. Alexios is the support guy with cat eye circlet, boss medic bandages, and fist and tooth proficiency. And Hecate is a new survivor from intimacy on catgut bow duty.

The hunt phase was wild—very first card, I rolled a nine and the hunt triggered immediately. Straight into the showdown.

The Antelope Fight

The antelope started by grazing as usual. We got off to a great start this time—bone darts actually hit for once and we got our first wound early. The fight was going smoothly until a critical wound reaction triggered a lone rampage: all non-death survivors suffered brain damage, knockdown survivors took damage at every hit location, and standing survivors got bashed and knocked back seven spaces.

That rampage caused some serious problems. Two of our survivors took permanent accuracy injuries (contracure)—both getting minus one permanent accuracy. That’s brutal, especially on the guitar player who has all the hunt XP.

Fishing for Crits

Despite having someone who crits on threes and another setup to crit regularly, we had terrible luck fishing for resources through critical wounds. We managed a few—a large flat tooth and a bladder—but nowhere near what we should have gotten with our luck setup.

The trap card caused problems as usual. We had to carefully manage it with the cat eye circlet, sometimes intentionally triggering it when we could absorb the consequences rather than risk hitting it at a bad time.

Victory with Scars

We beat the antelope, but we walked away with two permanent accuracy injuries. Next time, I’m definitely going to level two since level one felt almost too easy despite the injuries. We need the resources, and the party is strong enough now.

Rewards

Four basic resources and four screaming antelope resources. We got surge and dash as innovations during the settlement phase, plus red fist from the lantern event. The murder event is coming next lantern year because of marrow hunger, which should be interesting.

Tomorrow I’m getting back to the hobby side of things—working on my Children of Gomb sculpting contest entry.
