Casting custom daemon heads from silicone molds for a hobgoblin conversion project, plus plans for sculpting a blind helmet.
Transcript
We’re casting today. I just spilled a little bit, but I’m going to let it ride and just trim off any extra on that one. I mixed up too much material, of course, so I threw some into another mold. I don’t know what we’ll get, but now that I’m an expert sculpting master, it’ll be cool to see what we have to build on.
Checking the Results
While the casting cured—about 30 to 45 minutes—I went and played some Kingdom Death. Once everything hardened up, I popped the casts right out. That’s one good thing about using too much material on the molds.
We had an air bubble in the nose, which I kind of expected. In the future, I’ll put it in the vacuum pot, and I could have just stuck a needle down in there to pop that bubble. But we got two heads, and the second one is probably the one I’m actually going to use.
The Conversion Plan
So here’s what I’m thinking: this head goes on the daemon body as the normal head. One of the spells from the hobgoblin rulebook for this faction is that they’re blind. So the plan is to sculpt a metal helmet that covers his eyes—pretty much just a mouth showing. I’m also going to make a different mouth. I really just wanted to use this head and get the mold done.
I ordered sculpting tools and they’re supposed to come today, but it’s 11 PM and they haven’t been delivered, so I don’t think they’re coming. Once they arrive, I’ll sculpt the helmet and probably some armor on the back instead of the mushrooms I originally planned. I think that’ll be kind of cool.
Bonus Cast
I checked the other mold where I dumped the extra material. We got some arms and a belly gut—not exactly sure what to do with it. I should have used my base mold instead. I thought I’d get a little more out of it, honestly. But it could be some kind of crazy alien terrain. We’ll use it for something.
Looking Forward
Pretty happy with how the mold came out. The nose with the bubble in it honestly looks kind of cool with that hole—gives it character. But normally it’s supposed to be very sharp and pointy.
My hope is that today is the last midnight upload. I’ve readjusted everything and this is definitely the last time I’ll use this janky tripod that shakes like crazy. I’m going to start putting more effort into the videos—maybe actually try to edit some instead of just last-minute recording to get things out. Tomorrow’s video will be a try-hard video, and hopefully every one after that will be too.
I don’t count the days. I just know that every day, I am eternal.
