Making a Mold to Recast and Customize Miniatures

Taking a break from sculpting to make a silicone mold of Daemon Prince heads using Moldstar 15 Slow—prepping for custom head swaps and conversions.

Transcript

Taking a break from sculpting today because I ordered some sculpting tools and stuff to make my own tools, but they won’t be here until tomorrow. Our boy’s feet are all dried now and they look awesome.

Setting Up the Mold Box

I had two of these Daemon Prince heads on an old sprue. If you remember, I ripped this one off the block we made because the nose was already busted—I’m assuming Trent probably threw it in because the nose was missing. We know the nose is going to fail in the mold, but we don’t want the nose anyway because we’re going to cover that up with sculpting.

I put both heads in the mold box just to fill the space and get two chances at a usable head. I also want to cast a normal Daemon Prince head too. There was a hole in the box, so I tried to melt some plastic into it, then remembered I had plastic glue—got my brain firing on all cylinders. Super glued the heads to the bottom, and I’ll be able to bust or cut them off later.

Pouring the Silicone

We’re using Moldstar 15 Slow with a four-hour cure time—so this is probably about to be it for the video. You’ll have to stay tuned to see how it actually turns out.

Poured the silicone high up to hopefully get all the air bubbles out. I was a little short on material, so I cut off a couple chunks of extra silicone to top it off. You can see two pieces floating right there at the top. There’s some silicone coming out the side I’ll need to clean up, but I think we’ll be good.

Why It Doesn’t Need to Be Perfect

This doesn’t have to be the perfect Daemon Prince mold. I really just want something I know is going to match up with the rest of the body, because there’s a ton of stuff I want to sculpt on top of it. I just need some form of a workable head out of this, which I think I’m going to get.

I’ll post the results as soon as I get up in the morning to do the casting.
