Sculpting gnarly swollen feet and toenails on my custom Daemon Prince—thinking in basic shapes, using pins for detail work, and channeling childhood trauma into art.
Transcript
Welcome to the Hobby Nomicon. Today we’re sculpting some little feet.
Thinking in Shapes
I’m thinking of the forms of the foot—it’s a triangle, or technically a rectangle, but on this guy it’s a triangle with a bunch of circles for the toes. I balled that out, used isopropyl alcohol to smooth it over, then used a little pin to sketch in the toenails.
The process: box in the squares first, come in from the front, and to make them jagged I’m basically stippling—to put it in paintbrush terms. Then just lifting the nail up out of the nail bed, as nasty as that sounds.
The Inspiration
I can’t believe I’m about to say this, but as a kid, my grandparents were diabetic, and I’m modeling these feet after the swollen feet with ingrown toenails. That scarred me as a kid, so now it’s going on this Daemon Prince to scar everybody else.
The feet are super swollen—they almost blend into the legs. One, it was easy to sculpt, and two, I wanted them to look bloated, swollen, and pretty nasty. Little piggies coming off sausages.
Adding Texture
I use the back of a ball tool to add texture, then go back over it to smooth things out. Trying to match the existing skin texture without any real tools—just pins and isopropyl to smooth it back out and get fingerprints out.
On the other side, I went for the juxtaposition of cute little toes next to the gnarly ones. Same technique though: cut in the squares, squish them up, add jagged edges.
What’s Next
Pretty happy with the results, especially since I don’t really know what I’m doing sculpting-wise—just vibing out with it. The body is done now, and it’s on to the fun stuff. I really want to spend a lot of time on the head. I’m reading through the Hobgoblin rule book because there’s a ton of lore in there that I want to talk about in the next video.
