Unboxing the Gardens of Hecate Kickstarter from Meridian Miniatures—some of my all-time favorite sculpts—plus a Relic Blade Maximus update and thoughts on falling out of love with Warhammer.
Transcript
I swear this is not an unboxing review channel. This is the last one. Well—except when Karath sends his package. But this is the last thing I’ve been waiting for.
Gardens of Hecate Kickstarter
All the way from the UK. I’ve been waiting for some of these for a very long time—missed them when they originally went up for sale. They’ve been some of my favorite looking miniatures that I’ve admired from afar for a year or two, maybe longer. Feeling them in my hands is something else.
This is the most recent Andrew May / Meridian Miniatures Gardens of Hecate Kickstarter from the end of last year. It includes the Vampire Queen and a bunch of other models. My original plan was to use them for Turnip 28 or Forbidden Psalm, but then I found out about Necropolis and Sunrot—and these are going to be perfect for both.
Finding My Lane
This is kind of me finding myself in what I want to paint. I was trying to force my way through Warhammer miniatures, but I fell out of love with it a long time ago—not in an “I hate GW” way, just in an “I’ve changed as an artist” way. I stopped having fun painting them and stopped enjoying the game. Haven’t really played since 7th edition. Gave 8th a shot, skipped 9th, looked at 10th and realized it didn’t fix what wasn’t fun for me.
Started painting Warmachine models instead. The old sculpts are totally awesome. The new 3D printed stuff is hit or miss—either incredible or overproduced. And the Iron Kingdoms lore from the Kings, Nations, and Gods book is probably my all-time favorite setting.
Relic Blade Maximus Update
Built a bunch of Relic Blade stuff. Maximus is looking great—the white on the chest is the best white I’ve ever painted. Purple is in final glaze stages, blue still needs work. Very happy with this guy.
But let me stop rambling and get these Gardens of Hecate models built.
