A day of wrapping up 3D printing projects, texturing the game board with isopropyl alcohol mud, cleaning the hobby room, and a surprise giveaway for subscribers.
Transcript
Welcome to Hobby Nomicon. I recorded this three times now. The first time I forgot the microphone. The second time I forgot to plug the microphone into my phone. And now this is time number three. So I’ve forgotten all the important things I wanted to tell you, but right now we need to go check on some 3D prints.
Finishing Up 3D Printing
Important day because I have finished 3D printing for myself. Let me show you everything I’ve been printing the last couple of weeks. I finished all of the Kingdom Death base game terrain, which is pretty cool. I like this little creature guy. I’ve printed all the tokens and rulers for Midgard because I think I’m going to give that game a shot next week. I’ve printed all the Pharaoh that are available right now for Warmachine, and I printed up some vampire bats for my undead halflings.
I also printed a bunch of cool stuff that I’ll make videos on eventually with miniatures. I can now print all their awesome old-hammer style sculpts and sell them to you guys. So I’m building the website—stay tuned for that.
I’ve got to finish curing some things. I can’t get the edges to cure properly. I think they’re not getting hit with enough UV in my cure station. I might have to actually stand and hold a wand on them. But these Midgard pieces are the last things I’m going to 3D print for a while.
Board Texturing with Isopropyl Alcohol
We’re done with the board for a couple of days now because this stuff needs time. I mixed a bunch of isopropyl alcohol into the texture mix. That’s a key step. The isopropyl alcohol gets everything wet so I can put it down how I want it, and then it evaporates out. So you get a liquid mud texture—you’re putting down a very soupy mixture, but then the iso evaporates and all the other stuff stays in place.
The areas I applied it to are mostly hard now. You can see it looks like actual dirt. It’s a little bit spongy still because it’s not fully dry, but it looks like real mud—like a mudslide just came through. I’m going to put some water effects in the lowest parts of the board since that’s where water would naturally collect.
Building Something Bigger
You can kind of imagine now that I’m building something bigger. Am I building my own world? Am I building my own setting? I don’t know. I have a bag full of these foam cubes, but I’m sick of working with this material. I want to switch over to pink foam. These blocks are kind of too big, so I’ve got to think of a way to transition to smaller blocks. Maybe this is an older civilization that used the big ones and now we’re using smaller blocks. I’ve got to think through that, but something is cooking.
Studio Cleanup
I’ve been wanting to clean this place pretty much since the day I started this channel, but I kept telling myself I could either clean or hobby today. So I’ve just been hobbying. But now I’m at the point where I need to handle this because I want to do bigger projects, better projects. Being able to set up a tripod would be pretty cool.
I’ve cleaned out the closet. I’ve got the shelf behind me all clean. There’s probably a better way to organize this, but it’s working for me and it’s out of the way. Everything is in plastic totes so they’re protected—old board games like Super Dungeon Explore, Arcadia Quest, Questmaster Quest. I’m excited to play those with the kids when they get a little bit older.
Broken Coffee Mug Diorama
A mug just slipped right out of my hand, but it cracked almost perfectly down the middle. I’m going to wash the inside of it and seal the edges. This could be the perfect size for a little diorama. Am I crazy? Should I just throw it away? I’m going to leave the back half coffee-stained and dirty so it looks like a coffee cup from behind, but from the front I’m turning this into a diorama for sure.
Surprise Giveaway
The person who won the 100-subscriber giveaway has never contacted me to ship it. So if you’re watching this far into this random video, you’re definitely a real one. Send me an email at matt@hobbynomicon.com. Whoever the first person is to email me, I will ship it to you. It’s a Warhammer competitive series Lord Dark Fang. As long as you’re in the United States, I’ll send it for free.
Wrapping Up
This video is all over the place. I’ve done a lot of cleaning, but still a lot more to go. I’ve got to really think about how I’m going to use the space. For now, I’m just cleaning, getting organized, and then I’ll figure out the plan after. If you’re still here, thank you for watching. Tomorrow we’re finally painting on camera again—I’ve got a boy primed up, sitting over there, curing, and waiting.
